I
was recently reading Facebook posts. I enjoy
reading the humorous posts, and social
media is a great way to stay connected
with people you haven't seen in a long time.
Once in a while though I
come across an offensive
picture or a profanity laced
post. It tends to shock me.
Sometimes I think to myself,
"I would never post that, what
were they thinking?"
Then the other day it just sort of happened. No, it
wasn't a profanity laced post. I found this really funny
picture that made me laugh and I knew that some
of my friends, who share the same kind of humor,
would laugh as well. So I posted it, only to discover a
few hours later, to my extreme horror, that beneath
the funny picture some horrible words
were tagged onto it. I was shocked. I had
just shared this humorous post with my
friends and many had seen it -- offen-
sive words and all!
Then something else struck me,
what if my kids had read this?
What if the youth at our corps saw
this? Is that the kind of witness I
want them to see? We should ask
ourselves these kinds of questions
when we post things onto social media. We can either
lead people in the right direction or lead them astray...
even by accident. --Just a thought.
Special thanks to Captain Scott Strissel, corps officer for
The Salvation Army in Brainerd, Minnesota, for his contributions
as guest columnist for In Focus over the past year.
