ericho was a beautiful town in a
desert surrounded by balsam wood
forests and large rose gardens, beside
the slow Jordan River that wended its way
through the area. Because of its proximity
to Jerusalem, it was a city of priests. It was
wealthy, too, as it was located on one of the
main north/south trade routes between
Africa and Asia. The Romans realized
this early on and made it a center
of tax collection. With the priests,
travelers and tax collectors, it was a
city of the holy, the unholy and the
despised.
Among Jericho's residents was
a wayward Jew who had betrayed
his country to pursue the lucrative
career of a tax collector. The Romans
cared little about how much tax
collectors raked in as long as they
supplied the required amount, so it

was common practice for tax collectors to extort an
exorbitant fee above the legal tax. The tax collectors,
also known as publicans, not only supported a govern-
ment that occupied and oppressed Palestine, but they
cheated their fellow Jews. No wonder the term publi-
can was synonymous with sinner.
One such tax collector was Zaccheus. He did not
live up to his name, which means "pure." Zaccheus
had been bullied, perhaps because he was very short,
which may have led him to select a profession that al-
lowed him to be the bully. He was wealthy and power-
ful but incredibly lonely.
This despised little man felt compelled to see Jesus
when he heard He was coming through town, but
how? The crowds would be thick and he knew from
experience that no one would let him through. If he
were going to see Jesus he would have to find another
way. Ah, yes! The sycamore tree he had climbed as a
child would do! The little man scampered up the tree,
perched where he had the best view and waited for
Jesus.
Zaccheus could hear the crowd get louder in the dis-
tance. People thronged the middle of the road to catch
sight of Jesus. There He was! The disciples carefully
