Pope Francis calls young people
to "be revolutionaries with the
courage to seek true and lasting
love," against what he calls a cul-
ture of the temporary, where
more and more people are giv-
ing up on marriage as a public
commitment. He points out that
the family "is our first school
where we learn the arts of coop-
erative living and where we can
aspire to greatness as we strive
to realize our full capacity for
virtue and charity."
The state of marriage and
family in the United States has
undergone rapid change over
the past five decades. According
to Pew Research, the definition
of family is now more complex
and less traditional when com-
pared to the old ideal of couples
marrying young, starting a fam-
ily and staying together for life.
"It is one thing for adults to
make choices that jumble tradi-
tion, but children do not get

President Baldwin Lonsdale
reported that the damaged
infrastructure across the islands
that make up the country left
about 166,000 people on 22
islands without basic services,
110,000 of whom were without
water. In recent years the
Australia Eastern Territory has
established links with Vanuatu
and provided assistance.
Damaris Frick of the Army's
International Emergency
Services and Craig Arnold, a
logistics specialist with UPS,
arrived in Vanuatu to join
officers from Australia to
establish a response center and
work with other agencies. The
Australia Eastern Territory
initially received a donation of
$775,000. Now, with the help of
the UPS Foundation, the Army is
assisting remote communities.
Based on the Army's
assessments, the local
government asked The Salvation
Army to support three remote
villages not reached by other
agencies. The 1,000 residents
can only be reached by hiking
into the remote areas or by
boat. The team found people
living in caves and walking up to
two hours to find water sources.
Arnold says, "The next step will
be to arrange for essentials to
be transported on ocean freight
instead of air for efficiency, [as]
the initial needs for food and
water have now been covered,"
Arnold says. The team had an
engineer assess the rebuilding
of water pipes and tanks, and
options for providing
sustainable shelter were being
considered once basic needs for
food and water were met.

"The family is the basis of society. As the family is, so is the
