The War Cry | MAY 2015
A
daughter of Salvation Army officer parents, Eva
Evelyn Burrows was born on September 15, 1929
in Newcastle, Australia.
Eva received her Bachelor of Arts degree in May
1950 at Queensland University. She then entered the
William Booth Memorial Training College in London and
was commissioned a Salvation Army officer in 1951.
Her first appointment was assistant officer at the
Portsmouth Citadel
Corps, in the South-
ampton and Channel
Islands Division of the
British Territory. She
was then appointed as
an officer teacher at the
Howard Institute, a
large mission station in
Zimbabwe.
During her 14 years at Howard Institute, Eva became
concerned with the training of teachers for Salvation
Army schools throughout Zimbabwe. She took a course
at Sydney University and received her Master of
Education, and presented her thesis on the training of
African teachers in Zimbabwe.
Eva became the first female vice principal of Howard
Institute and from there became the principal of the
Usher Institute, a secondary boarding school for girls. Under
her innovative leadership, Usher became an outstanding
educational center for girls.
In 1970 Eva was appointed to the International College
for Officers as vice principal and then later as principal.
There she spent five years.
Eva's appointment as leader of Women's Social Services
in Great Britain and Northern Ireland from 1975 to 1977
brought her into close
contact with the effects of
poverty and exploitation in
the crowded cities of Britain.
In January 1977 Eva
became Territorial Com-
mander for Sri Lanka. In less
then three years she made
such an impression in that
predominantly Buddhist
country that The Ceylon Observer said of her, "People like
Eva Burrows grace any country they serve in. The Salvation
Army has been very pragmatic and practical about its work,
and Eva Burrows is a symbol of the Army's attitude to the
poor and meek."
Eva became leader of The Salvation Army's work in
Scotland in December 1979. Salvationists remember the
drive and devotion she brought to her assignment.
