The War Cry | MAY 2015
Army past, Present
& Future
S
alvationists gathering in London in July for the International Congress will
celebrate God's grace toward the Army for 150 years, under the theme
Boundless, The Whole World Redeeming.
The latest edition of Word & Deed, the Army's Journal of Theology and Ministry,
examines the theological core of the Army, which has spurred its advance as a
people of God identified by the holiness tradition of the church.
In keeping with the Congress, contributors including Major Alan Harley, Andrew
Eason, Dr. Jonathan Raymond and Lt. Colonel Allen Satterlee explore what God
has done in the past, what He continues to do in the present, and what He will do
through the Army in the future.
Subscribe to Word & Deed to tap into the Army's tradition and promise.

Kevin's grounding in the Chris-
tian faith comes from his family,
the schools the Washington, D.C.,
native attended and the mentors in
his life. He says that when he was
a child he wanted to know where
we come from, why we are here
and what life is worth. His mother
and teachers at his Christian
school would talk to him about
spiritual matters and point him to
Jesus Christ. He says former team-
mate Kevin Ollie helped him "feel
more comfortable in my faith
around other people." Durant goes
to chapel before every game, and

The words tattooed on Durant's
back help him deal with his latest

undergone surgery and hopes
to return to the basketball court
for the 2015 to 2016 season:
"Consider it a sheer gift, friends,
when tests and challenges come
at you from all sides. You know that
under pressure, your faith-life is
forced into the open and shows
its true colors. So don't try to
get out of anything prematurely.
Let it do its work so you become
mature and well-developed,
not defi cient in any way."

Durant says he has learned not
to take anything for granted. His
Association of American Universi-
ties coach Charles Craig was mur-
dered 10 years ago at age 35 in a
gang-related case of mistaken iden-
tity. Durant has worn number 35
on his jersey ever since in honor of
his coach and mentor.
Durant wears a tattoo on his
wrist that says, "live for eternity."
The forward remarks, "God says
that's where we're all headed, and
I want to live with that eternal per-
spective on everything I do now."
