here is a great metaphor that con-
cerns our willingness to get down
and dirty with respect to what is
right or wrong in the world today.
Where you place yourself can say
much about how you wish to engage our world
regarding what you think really matters.
Imagine a split-screen image of a stage and a balcony.
Players on the stage are very much involved in the
drama of life in an increasingly
hostile world. Their lives are played
out with emotion, effort and engage-
ment. On the stage, the action gets
hot and heavy. Life can get messy.
Meanwhile,
those in the balcony
watch and comment about what is
happening down on the stage. They
are not involved. They will applaud
when they are pleased with what
they see; and they become indignant
(and may even walk out) when they
are displeased.
The reality is
that many players
start out on the stage, but some-
where along the line end up in the
balcony. As life changes us, we
might alter our perception--perhaps
intentionally, but usually not.
As Christians,
we believe in
the grace and mercy of God for all
mankind. Furthermore, He wants us
to extend that love to others. News
networks seem to bring us more
atrocities every day, both home and
abroad. This is a call to respond to
evil with the only real weapon we
have--God's love. No one should be
content to remain in the balcony. So
the question becomes: From which
perspective do you want to address
the needs of the world?
Do you want to be a player,
a
participant in the drama played
out onstage?
Will You
Take
The
Balcony
or
The
Stage
?
