with post-traumatic stress disor-
der. After returning to her home,
the Army helped her rebuild. When
Bible study and worship services
returned to the Citadel Corps, so
did Valerie. "The Salvation Army
adopted me, took me in, clothed
me, sheltered me, fed me and
prayed over me," she says.
Several staff members at the area
command have been sold on the Sal-
vation Army's multiple ministries
and have come on board as case-
workers and volunteers. Cynthia
Morrison began working for the
Army in 2009 as a case manager.
In addition to coordinating
building projects for houses for dis-
placed families, Cynthia also pro-
moted Major Frizzell's vision to
grow the local economy by offering

JAPAN Salvationists
responded immediately after the
unprecedented earthquake and
tsunami in March 2011, sending
relief teams and supplies where
needed most. Long-term assis-
tance through The Salvation Army World Services Office
included providing fishermen with boats and nets and
rebuilding community centers so people could regain self
sufficiency.
JOPLIN, MO When a EF5 tornado, one of
the deadliest ever, careened through Joplin in the spring,
six emergency canteens fed survivors and recovery teams
and allowed Salvationists to offer counseling, prayer and
referrals to social services in difficult to reach areas.
2012
NEW JERSEY & NEW YORK
The Army provided over
2 million prepared meals and
700,000 bottles of water in
the initial 10 days alone
after Hurricane Sandy
destroyed homes, businesses and infrastructure.
The Army then initiated long-term rebuilding plans.
2013
OKLAHOMA Mobile canteens
roamed the streets of Moore, Oklahoma,
serving sandwiches and beverages to
the thousands who suffered severe
losses from a major tornado. Rescue
teams reached isolated residents in
the surrounding areas with supplies.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA Following the
crash landing of an Asiana Airlines Boeing 777, personnel
from the San Francisco area served as translators while
providing supplies and emotional care at the airport
and at the hospitals where survivors were taken.
PHILIPPINES After Typhoon Haiyan claimed more
than 6,000 lives and left about four million homeless,
local Salvationists traversed difficult terrain to
bring water, food, fuel, shelter, materials and supplies
to victims. Financial support made it possible
for Salvationists to offer essential supplies, medical
treatment, and long-term reconstruction projects.
GALENA, AK When 90 percent of homes flooded in
this remote outpost of 470 people, the Army teamed up
with government and private agencies, including the Red
Cross, to reach, rescue, feed and shelter victims.
2014
OSO, WA Victims of a
tragic mudslide found financial
assistance, supplies and counsel-
ing as Army personnel joined
other agencies to staff
the Joint Resource Centers.
KANSAS to FLORIDA Volunteers stepped forward to
feed and house victims in eight states and provide spiritual
counsel after an historic outbreak of tornadoes morphed
into major flooding.
FERGUSON, MO Salvationists
participated in the Community Resource Drop-in Center,
led by the United Way of Greater St. Louis, and
supported the state's Highway Patrol Command
Center by request following unrest spurred by
shooting of Michael Brown by a police officer.
2015
NEPAL An international
team, including U.S. personnel
supported by Nepalese Salvation-
ists, organized convoys, air drops
and portages to bring rice, oil,
tarpaulins, hygiene products, solar
lamps, mosquito nets and other
supplies to residents of remote communities after major
earthquakes killed thousands and left millions in need.
