The War Cry | OCTOBER 2014
There was a time when Christians considered
movies and other forms of entertainment as dis-
tractions from the essential observances of faith
activities such as Bible reading, prayer, worship
and service. Today, as society has grown acutely
sensitive to issues about the separation of church
and state, shared values of old based on Christian
doctrine can no longer be considered part of
common knowledge. As the poet said,
"the truth will out, it always will." Perhaps the
medium of movies can help us understand, in
this world of constant media streaming and
exposure, that the God of the Judeo-Christian
tradition is "closer to us than breathing, nearer
than hands and feet." At least the trend of faith
based movies can advance dialogue about
the inestimable worthiness of foundational
beliefs and values that constitute true
wisdom as revealed by the Creator.

A
llyson, played by Sarah Drew, is a Christian stay-at-home mom who
plans a long-awaited night out with friends. When nothing goes as
planned, the moms learn that it's impossible to be a perfect mother and
that their first loyalty is to God. The film portrays motherhood as a blessing,
but does not gloss over the everyday problems of raising children.
I
n this retelling of the "Left Behind" film based
on the popular Christian book series, a small
group of survivors find themselves left behind
after millions of people suddenly vanish and the
world is plunged into chaos and destruction. The
film, starring Nicholas Cage, deals
with the "Rapture" that some
say will occur before the sec-
ond coming of Christ. Chris-
tians hold different opinions
as to how the world will
end, and this movie
will certainly re-open
the conversation
about this con-
troversial topic.
I
nspired by the Bible's "Song of Solomon," protagonist Jed King is
an aspiring singer-songwriter who has long struggled in the shadow
of his ethically troubled father. Jed writes a song for his wife that
propels him to instant stardom. He faces temptation that threatens to
destroy his marriage and his life. He finds himself at a crossroads face
to face with greed and fame. Stars Alan Powell and Ali Faulkner.
