The War Cry | OCTOBER 2014
T
he USA Southern Territory has been
broadcasting its webbased news
program Salvation Army Today since Jan-
uary 2012.
Coanchored by Major John Carter
Community Relations Director, Territorial Creative
Arts Director Roberta Simmons Smith and New Media
Coordinator Chris Raymer,
the show is produced by the
Communications Bureau
of the Southern Territory's
Community Relations and
Development Department.
The show presents break-
ing news and informa-
tion concerning The Salva-
tion Army's many ministries from around the world.
Salvation Army Today
has its own channel on You-
Tube every Tuesday and Thursday. In preparation
for each broadcast, writ-
ers scour the web using
sophisticated software
and reach out to the Army
world for new and excit-
ing material. The show
has covered stories of crippling addiction and hard
fought recovery; the fight against family homeless-
ness, cutting edge education and job training pro-
grams, poignant reunions of family members, inter-
national travels of the General, plus many stories
of what The Salvation Army does best, reaching the
lost and forgotten in the name of Jesus Christ.
"For some time we have wanted to communicate
through the Internet video medium the wonder-
ful work of the Army's mission and ministry," say
producer Christopher Priest. "With this innovative
programming, it is hoped that the public will be-
gin to learn of the movement's heritage, steadfast-
ness and God glorifying mission that affects all hu-
manity in 126 countries across the globe each day."
The show is transmitted on Salvation Army websites
and Facebook pages, and is updated for each broadcast,
with previous broadcasts available as an archive. Ad-
visory organization members and other volunteers are
encouraged to view the weekly show as an aid to their
understanding of the enormous potential in partner-
ing with the Army, and in sharing their vision for how
the Army can make a difference in the community.
Those readers who can share the link with oth-
ers are encouraged to do so. This especially applies
to all Army units that wish to share the broadcast
on their web pages and show the program in their
buildings through TV screens and projection during
meetings. Expansion of the viewer base is a positive
step in the ongoing challenge of sharing the mission
and ministry of the Army with the general public.
The program is recorded within 24 hours of release
and involves a crew of three technicians, all members
of the Southern Territory's Communications Bureau.
Christopher Priest concludes, "We are con-
stantly working towards the show becom-
ing a vital source of information on Salva-
tion Army ministries. We realize what this can
mean to The Salvation Army worldwide."
