The War Cry | SEPTEMBER 2014
Anyone who yearns to answer
the call of divine justice through a
global lens will be emboldened by
a new Salvation Army book enti-
tled When Justice Is the Measure.
Authors M. Christine MacMillan,
Don Posterski and James E. Read,
who wrote the book jointly while
on the International Social Justice
Commission together, explore the
dual focus of Jesus' hope for hu-
manity--the spiritually poor and
the socially poor. "Jesus lived right
and righted wrongs," they point out,
therefore the mission of His follow-
ers should be to do the same. The
authors exhort disciples of Christ to
include the excluded, challenge cul-
tural norms, confront corruption and advocate for the op-
pressed. Using compelling biblical insights, they seek to remind
us of the interaction between humanity, justice and the image
of God. In the final pages, you will uncover gems of wisdom in
Commissioner McMillan's reflection on living and working in
Hopetown, a women's hostel in the east end of London, where
The Salvation Army got its start.

Praying the Attributes of God,
by Ann Spangler, is meant for those
who desire a more visceral under-
standing of the nature of God.
Spangler seeks to impart such
knowledge by exploring the attri-
butes of divinity, which she describes
as "an artificial construct, a helpful
way to learn about God." But she
readily admits the limits of this
process, noting that "God cannot
be divided into various attributes,
nor will He act in ways that contra-
dict Himself. He is, for instance, still
just even when He is expressing His
mercy, and still loving when express-
ing His jealousy." Spangler wants
the reader to develop a truer image
of God, "bigger and better," instead of "a vision that is thin
and anemic, one that will fall to pieces when life becomes
more difficult than we can bear."
Charles Spurgeon has written, "No subject of contemplation
will tend more to humble the mind than thoughts of God.
But while the subject humbles the mind it also expands it."
Immersion in this 17-week devotional will intimately acquaint
you with a God who is not moody, never surprised or frustrated,
always fair, never gives up, has no limits and always knows
what to do.

F
orty-eight scholars and editors labored
for seven years to produce the New
Living Translation Study Bible, based
on the most recent scholarship in the
theory of translation. Translators sought to cre-
ate a text that would have the same impact on
modern readers that the Hebrew and Greek
text had on original readers of the Bible. Their
goal was an easy to read translation true to the
original meaning, which led to the translation
of entire thoughts, rather than individual words,
into everyday English.
