A
t the lowest point of his
addiction to alcohol, Jimmy
Greer was reduced to drink-
ing ordinary rubbing alcohol for two
main reasons. "First, because it was
cheap; second, because drug stores
are all over town and many are open
24 hours a day," he admits.
In fact, he adds, so desperate was
he to get every single drop, he would
lick the silver foil security cover on
the bottle after initially removing it.
His childhood was a happy one, growing up
in a Catholic family in Carey, Ohio, just outside
of Toledo. After high school he attended college
for a year at nearby Boston (Ohio) College--but
was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1972.
Later, while serving in Germany, he decided
to try out for the USAFE (United States Armed
Forces-Europe) baseball team. He won one of
