unity. Jesus unifies both portions of the Holy Scriptures.
Jesus actively participated in Jewish religious
ritual from His early days. Mary and Joseph presented
their six-week-old son, Yeshua, in the Temple. He was
their first born, and the law required that He be taken
to the priests to be redeemed (Luke 2:22-38). He was
raised in a devout, Godfearing home. Luke notes that
"...His parents used to go to Jerusalem every year at the
Feast of Passover" (Luke 2:41). Throughout His earthly
ministry Jesus taught that His mission was not to
destroy the Law, but to fulfill it (Matt. 5:17).
Jesus often chose the national festivals as settings
to make astonishing statements about Himself, His
Father, His relationship to the Word of God and to the
world He came to save. In the Gospel of John alone, a
surprising majority of the content is given to Jesus'
ministry at the great feasts of Israel. Of the 879 verses
in John's gospel, 660 verses (75% of the gospel) directly
relate to events occurring before, during or immediately
following one of the feasts!
There are seven appointed Feasts of the Lord
specified in Leviticus 23, noting that the Day of Atone-
ment is technically a fast and not a feast:
1.
The Passover
 Pesach (verses 4-5)
2.
The Feast of Unleavened Bread
(verses 6-8)
3.
The Feast of First Fruits
(verses 9-14)
4.
The Feast of Pentecost
 Shavuot (verses 15-22)
5.
The Feast of Trumpets
 Rosh Hashana (vs 23-25)
6.
The Day of Atonement
 Yom Kippur (verses 26-32)
7.
The Feast of Tabernacles
 Sukkot (verses 33-44)
The Feasts of the Lord recorded in Leviticus 23 reveal
the eternal truth that the Good News of the New Testa-
ment cannot be fully understood without the founda-
tional truths of the Old Testament. And the profound
realities of the Old Testament are only comprehended in
light of the Christ of the New Testament. In the words of
Jesus, "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law
or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to
ful
fi ll them" (Matthew 5:17).
