The War Cry | NOVEMBER 2014
n the City of Fountains in the heart of the Midwest,
through which Lewis and Clark hiked on their way to
chart the American frontier, a new source of rejuvena-
tion is carrying people beyond the cycle of intergenera-
tional poverty.
Trusted and highly skilled guides help them land
safely on shores of self-sufficiency, selfrespect and positive
change. This new source has in a few short years spread from several
areas in the Midwest to Salvation Army centers of operation
throughout the nation. Known as the Pathway of Hope (POH), it
helps families break through chronic poverty by reapplying the
vision that inspired the birth of The Salvation Army 149 years ago.
The vision began when Commissioners Paul and Carol Seiler,
leaders of the Army's Central Territory, decided to respond to the
growing awareness that standard methods for helping those in
poverty actually trap some beneficiaries in a cycle of dependency.
These methods chart assistance provided rather than successful
outcomes achieved.
