The War Cry | FEBRUARY 2015
L
ast month, The Salvation Army in Malaysia
brought emergency supplies by boat to a
small village cut off by devastating floods in
the eastern part of the country. At least 21
people lost their lives and more than 200,000 were
displaced in the worst flooding in decades.
Colonel Lyndon Buckingham, territorial commander for
the Army's Singapore, Malaysia and Myanmar Territory,
explained that Salvationists and volunteers overcame great
difficulties to reach isolated communities, even though the
Army does not currently operate in the affected area. He
said teams secured a small boat, arranged a truck, pulled
together a team of volunteers and delivered food to Men-
takab, the area hit hardest by the flooding.
Now that the floodwaters have receded, long term assistance
is being provided. The Army has partnered with the govern-
ment and other agencies, under the direction of Major Tan
Guat Hai, who is based in the capital city, Kuala Lumpur.

T
ens of thousands
of Salvationists
have committed
to reading the en-
tire New Testa-
ment in 2015, one of several
initiatives to mark The Salva-
tion Army's 150th anniver-
sary year. BoundlessThe
Whole World Reading aims
to unite officers, soldiers and
friends as they read one chapter of the Bible each weekday.
And for anyone who missed the start, you can still catch up!
Printed copies of the Bible-reading plan have been distrib-
uted to all 126 countries in which there is a Salvation Army
presence, while thousands of people are also taking part in
the challenge online at sar.my/biblechallenge or using a mo-
bile app (see sar.my/bibleapp). Individuals in areas without
an established Salvation Army ministry are also participating,
in countries such as Thailand, Vietnam and Saudi Arabia.
Participants are encour-
aged not just to read the Scrip-
ture, but also to discuss it,
pray about it and share it with
friends and family. The web-
site has been busy with con-
tributors doing just that. Invite
friends, family and colleagues
to share in the growing initia-
tive leading to the 150th Anni-
versary Conference in London
this July: Boundless, the
Whole World Redeeming.

Most of us might try and hide
the black sheep hanging on
our family tree, but Matthew highlights it!

"
I think it's impossible to be
forgiven if we do not repent.
Repentance is a requirement. In the case of
Jesus, he was baptized to fulfill the law...
`So to fulfill all righteousness' (Matthew 3:15).

Jesus was a refugee, seeking asylum
in Egypt,
a country where many Christians
today are not safe. May God provide protection
for the world's displaced people.
May we as
a Christian Army
provide relief and
welcome to the strangers who come to our
various lands, who flee to escape persecution.

his is not an eye chart, but a helpful reminder about how to tap into the power of prayer.
Lt. Colonel Timothy Mabaso, a Salvation Army officer from Kenya now serving as an
International Auditor at the Army's headquarters in London, has been sharing it since he
found it in Norman Vincent Peale's book The Power of Positive Thinking over 30 years ago.
