The War Cry | JANUARY 2016
Stepping Out of the Page written by Major Karen K. Satterlee
and illustrated by Hoyle Wallace, is a compilation of biblical
monologues years in the making. The author has written and
performed each these monologues over
a span of more than 50 years. The char-
acter studies offer new insights and give
life to biblical figures real and imagined,
named and nameless.
If you have ever wondered how Miriam
felt as she watched her baby brother be-
ing placed in a basket and launched
down the Nile River, or how the Prodigal
Son broke his mother's heart when he left
home, or what trials Mary went through,
Stepping Out of the Pages is for you. Sat-
terlee conceives new characters like the
innkeeper's wife and a servant girl at a
banquet. Readers are led to explore the
characters' thoughts, feelings and re-
sponses to various situations.
The monologues can be read in private or in a group setting
such as a Bible study. A study guide included at the end provides
a number of Bible references, questions to stimulate discussion
and topics for prayer. Readers can take advantage of a list of fur-
ther reading as well.
A lifelong Salvation Army officer and pastor, Satterlee has per-
formed dramatic biblical monologues in churches and various
women's retreats and conferences. She encourages readers to per-
form the monologues for a church audience or public gathering.

Christ in You: Why God Trusts You More Than You Trust Yourself,
by Eric B. Johnson, makes a bold claim: "Every solution to every
problem known to the human race lives in you." Over the course
of the book, the minister, church leader
and bestselling author convincingly dem-
onstrates how God uses individuals to
bring healing, life and hope to the world.
According to Johnson, we limit ourselves
when we don't understand what it truly
means to have Christ dwell within us. He
encourages believers to discover the evi-
dence of God's trust in them and to help
bring the Kingdom of Heaven to earth.
Chapter such as "The Light That Is in
You," "Conviction--The Birthplace of Confi-
dence" and "Permission to Be Great" em-
phasize vital truths to bring the reader
closer to God. Johnson touches on themes
like love, striving, pride and our percep-
tions of God. Comprehensive and balanced, the book applies anal-
ogies, personal stories, practical applications and Scripture to offer
wisdom and revelation. Johnson urges Christians to challenge
conventional ways of thinking and paradigms that restrict Christ's
intentions, and to be the "most confident people... fully aware of
who they are and of whom they serve. Out of that awareness is
birthed in us a divine compassion to serve the human race with
the cause of Christ."
Christ in You is a thought-provoking call to walk in faith and
boldness.

V
irginia Woolf called Leo Tol-
stoy (1828-1910) "the greatest
of all novelists." Tolstoy en-
thusiasts and first-time read-
ers alike may reach the same conclu-
sion after reading a new collection of
some of his best writing. The Gospel
in Tolstoy: Selections from His Short
Stories, and Novels
is an anthology
compiled by Plough Publishing House,
featuring artwork by Fritz Eichenberg.
Readers can explore an accessible and
exceptional sampling of Tolstoy's work, with se-
lections from opuses such as Anna Karenina or
War and Peace.
The life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth--
as well as the gospel themes of betrayal and for-
giveness, sacrifice and redemption, death and
resurrection--fascinated this giant of Russian
literature. His spiritual journey was tumultuous.
As a teenager, Tolstoy lost his traditional Chris-
tian faith, eventually leaving the
Orthodox Church of his upbring-
ing. He became attracted to ide-
als of ascetic morality, denial of
self and non-violence. In 1884, Tol-
stoy wrote What I Believe, which
described his own unique set of
Christian beliefs. The search for
God is a common thread in his
work.
This anthology draws from War
and Peace, Anna Karenina, Resur-
rection, The Death of Ivan Ilyich, The King-
dom of God Is Within You, Master and Man, Walk
in the Light,
and Twenty-Three Tales. A contextu-
al note prefaces each of the selections. Also in-
cluded are a biographical sketch by Charles
Moore and an afterword by Eberhard Arnold.
Throughout, Eichenberg's expressive wood en-
gravings illustrate the book beautifully.
