The War Cry | JANUARY 2016
respective foundations determined what happened
next: the house of the foolish man collapsed from the
force of the rain, floodwaters and wind, while the
house of the wise man stood strong against the ele-
ments. The point of the parable was made before the
conclusion; the outcomes were inevitable.
Rain is a commonplace event; it happens to ev-
erybody, regardless of religious faith. Rain is sure
to fall in our lives. Yet people often display foolish
behavior in everyday circumstances when they lack
that solid foundation. Think of episodes of road rage,
or of customers admonishing store
clerks. It's not that irritation doesn't
trouble the wise, godly person. The
difference lies in how the wise and
the foolish react.
The rain can lead to floods, one of a
number of things that can rise up and
threaten to swallow us. The floods we
face might be a constant fight with depression, or liv-
ing or working in a hostile environment. The floods will
sweep us away if our foundations are not sure. The fool-
ish are washed away, but the wise stand firm.
Think of the winds as the attacks of Satan,
whether they come from others' persecution or op-
pression. Christians live in a world that constantly
attacks righteousness, demeans purity and defines
religious conviction as narrow and judgmental.
These things sorely distress the child of God. The
great Bible teacher of a generation ago, Dr. Martin
Lloyd-Jones, remarked, "It is not so much that the
Christian wants to forsake his faith, but the power of
the world can be so great that he wonders at times
whether his foundation is going to hold."
Who Is
at Fault?
Because these
circumstances test
the structure of what
we are, they reveal our
internal strength. The
wise, who have built their
lives on Christ and have cul-
tivated a deeper and abiding relationship with Him,
will not only weather the storm but loudly proclaim,
"Glory to God! He has brought me
through!"
The foolish person tends to
blame God for what has gone
wrong. When someone cries,
"Where is God?" he is revealing the
faulty house of his hope, not the
absence of God. He has based his
beliefs not on the truth faith of Christianity but on
some idolatrous caricature of his own making, often
patched together with popular culture mumbo-
jumbo. In the end, not only is this kind of false reli-
gion wrong, it is useless.
Which foundation have you built your life upon?
The good news is that if you built foolishly, by God's
help you can dig better foundations. When the storms
come--and they will--you too will be able to praise
God for the victory. If you have built your life on the
foundation that is Christ, continue to attend to your
soul-life. Neglected buildings can fall into ruin and so
can you. Treasure what has been given to you.
