lie off the southeast
coast of Puerto Rico,
almost hidden away
among the many island nations
and colonies of the Caribbean.
The three principal islands of St.
Thomas, St. Croix and St. John
are home to approximately
100,000 American citizens.
Like
the rest of the Caribbean, their
history includes pirates, slave trade,

canes set against crystal-clear waters,
beautiful white-sand beaches and a
sunny, tropical climate.
The Salvation Army has been active
in the Virgin Islands since 1917, when
Adjutant and Mrs. Trotman pioneered
the work in St. Thomas. It later
expanded to St. Croix, the second
largest population center. Attached
originally to the Caribbean Territory,
the Virgin Islands transferred to the
USA Eastern Territory when the
United States bought the islands from
Denmark the same year the Army
opened.
For most of its history, the Army in
St. Thomas has been headquartered
in its building on Main Street, a short
distance from the seashore and down
the street from the former slave
market, now a farmers market.
Over the years, the Army has
experienced its ups and downs.
