VIRGIN ISLANDS lie off the southeast coast of Puerto Rico, almost hidden away and colonies of the Caribbean. The three principal islands of St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John are home to approximately 100,000 American citizens. Like the rest of the Caribbean, their history includes pirates, slave trade, European wars and disastrous hurri- canes set against crystal-clear waters, beautiful white-sand beaches and a sunny, tropical climate.
