The Parable of the Wise
and
Foolish Builders
O
nce upon a time there were three
little pigs. You remember the story.
When they were building their homes,
one pig used straw, one pig used sticks and
one pig used bricks. The pig that used bricks
was the only one to survive the hungry
wolf's attack. He built his home wisely.
.
Long before the three little pigs made their
debut in storyland, Jesus told spoke of a wise and
a foolish builder. His story came at the end of the
Sermon on the Mount, a fitting conclusion to the
groundbreaking message He had just shared.
In the Bible story, Jesus first describes the
foolish builder. We know
from Scripture
and from life what a foolish person is like. He
listens but doesn't put what he hears into practice.
He tends to be in a hurry to attend to his own needs
but is too busy to learn the disciplines needed for
a craft or for life in general. He reverts to laziness
if he cannot see an immediate benefit to himself
in doing something. Rules and regulations are for
other people, since the foolish man is convinced that
he knows more than anyone else. He is supremely
selfish and self-centered, giving only when certain
he will get what he wants in return. He does not
think through the consequences of his actions.
In Jesus' story, the foolish man does a slapdash
job of building, and constructs his house on sand.
In contrast to the foolish man, the wise man
knows wisdom begins and ends with the Author of
all truth. He seeks God intentionally and studies
Scripture to understand His will and heart. His
obedience demonstrates his love, and his com-
mitment to being the best for Christ shows in
the spiritual disciplines of prayer, Bible reading,
worship and service to others. He has perspective,
recognizing that this life is just the prelude to
eternity. The wise man builds his house atop a
strong foundation of solid bedrock. The pro-
cess is time-consuming and difficult work,
but it is absolutely necessary.
The fate of the houses of the foolish
man and the wise was decided long
before the first rains fell and the
first wind buffeted them. The
