P
hil Jones remembers the day when
his "heart opened up, and Christ
stepped in!"
Addicted to alcohol from
the age of 14 until his conversion to Christ at 52,
he knows that during those 38 years of alcohol-
ism there were many times he could easily have
died. The depth of Phil's addiction makes his
rebirth all the more remarkable.
As a child, Phil remembers sitting in church
every Sunday with his father, who often played
gospel songs on the piano.
However, "something happened in his life
that caused him to slip away from God," Phil
says, "but to the glory of God I continued to go
to church alone!" Phil worshipped at a church
directly across the street from his house. "My
father would be asleep when I left the house to
go to church. In the midst of a lot of bad things
going on in my family, church was my refuge for
much of my childhood."
Unfortunately, Phil was introduced to alcohol
at 14. He reflects how his rapidly growing ad-
diction "took my focus away from Jesus, and as
I grew further away from Him, I grew closer to
catastrophe because I was powerless to resist
that next drink."
Phil shudders to think of the 38 "wasted
years" during which he wandered through "a
barren wilderness."
"But I believe that all during that time, Jesus
never left me; the Holy Spirit never gave up on
me," he says.
In 2006, Phil says God led him to The Salva-
tion Army's Social Services office in his home-
town of Philadelphia. There, he met Ted Lewis,
who would become something of a mentor to him.
"Ted set up an appointment for me at the ARC
[Adult Rehabilitation Center] in November, but
I missed that one," Phil says. "Ted didn't give
up on me, and he made another appointment
for me in January 2007. That one I made!" He
adds that keeping this appointment was the best
thing he could have done. "There I met Majors
David and Evie Wilson, and it was Major Evie's
anointed preaching and her singing that enabled
my heart to open up, and Jesus stepped in!"
The prayer in Psalm 51:10 mirrors Phil's own:
"Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a
loyal spirit within me."
After nine months in the ARC program, Phil
graduated. He was accepted into the New Begin-
nings program in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He
would have gone on to training college to become
a Salvation Army officer if not for his age. Now,
Phil is a faithful soldier in the Lancaster Cita-
del Corps. He plays his bass guitar in the corps'
praise band and enjoys attending several Bible
study groups per week.
"I believe my calling is to work with men who
are struggling with addictions to drugs and alco-
hol. I also have a heart to minister to young men
who are without a father-figure--both are where
I
used to be!"
