The War Cry | MARCH 2015
IT IS APPOINTED UNTO MEN
Thank you, Lt. Colonel Satterlee, for the
beautifully written review of my dad (Major
George Payton) and his family's book, It Is
Appointed Unto Men. My dad has always
been the family historian, and I have heard
these stories all my life. It is so gratifying to
see the book in print and be able to share
the inspiration of early Salvation Army
history with others. God willing we will have
him around for a long, long time. Blessings
to you and your staff at the War Cry.

STILL RELEVANT, STILL ADVANCING
In "Still Relevant, Still Advancing" (January 2015), the National
Commander questioned whether young people should attend
college before entering one of our offi cer training colleges. I
understand this comment was based on the advances made to
help current offi cers without a college degree obtain that level
of academic competency. I think this opinion is retrogressive to
our long struggle to achieve placing trained, equipped, mature
offi cers in their fi rst appointment.
A teenager with two years of offi cer
training is not ready in the 21st century to
take on the demands of offi cership. College
after high school is a wonderful and
necessary incubator for maturation, the
development of interpersonal skills and
academic preparation. The curricula of
offi cer training colleges can then build on
the college experience, specifi cally
addressing expectations for profi ciency as
a commissioned offi cer.
We certainly do not want untrained, un-credentialed
doctors, professors, counselors or fi nancial advisors. We
cannot give our congregations and communities competent
pastoral leadership, counseling and community involvement
skills without diligence in requiring professional preparation.
I love serving in The Salvation Army. I want what's "cutting
edge" for our future. Let us commit to placing on the fi eld
called, prepared and credentialed personnel as our peer
denominations and organizations have valued for many years.

BOX MAN WILLIE
Your January edition did some coverage on the homeless
problem with Shirley A. Reynolds' wonderful piece, "Box Man
Willie," which included a sidebar about the Army's ministry to
the homeless and a spot from Minncor Industries about
donating beds for the homeless.
In Levittown, Pennsylvania, the one homeless shelter is
overcrowded and there is a long waiting list. Consequently,
many homeless people end up sleeping in their cars, in tents or
on walkways.
I am a volunteer at the Levittown Salvation Army Community
Center. I got to know many homeless people in my area. I
couldn't afford Internet at home to do my freelance writing, etc.,
and started using the Wi-Fi at the Levittown library. I befriended
some homeless people I knew from the community meals held
at the Levittown corps. I hung out with them and they invited
me to take the free bus provided by Advocates for the Homeless
and Those in Need (AHTN). I've gotten to know fi rsthand the
homeless and their plight. Although I am not homeless, I have
been needy and they consider me one of them. I have earned
their trust and friendship.
I originally came to The Salvation Army in Levittown when I
needed food. I know what it is like to have others help me and I
plan to use my writing skills to help the homeless. I trust others
will join us.

Words of Life focuses on the Trinity, and the May
through August edition centers on God the Father. Major Beverly
Ivany explores the Old Testament books of Joshua and Samuel,
observes Ezra's discerning leadership and seeks insight from the
sufferings of Job. In the New Testament,
Words of Life highlights
Matthew, the opening chapters of the Gospel of John and Acts
of the Apostles. Guest writer Commissioner Lalkiamlova guides
