Army's International Spiritual Life Commission,
the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and the
11 doctrines of The Salvation Army. He then re-
views 12 distinct calls, the first of which is the
call to worship. Recognizing that it is essential
for new believers to gather regularly for worship
in order to develop a Christian worldview, Major
Doss invites the reader to consider The Salvation
Army as their church home if they have none.
In the call to soldiership, Doss writes that
costly discipleship, obedience and soldiership
are one and the same. The calling to take up
one's cross is still relevant today and we are to
"Endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus
Christ" (2 Tim. 2:3).
The author does a remarkable job of juxta-
posing elements from three historic bodies of
knowledge and weaving them together into one
cohesive text that will be an important read in any Salvation
Army setting for years to come.

Who Are These Salvationists?
is an erudite profile of the nearly
150yearold Salvation Army,
covering its roots, theology and
identity in the body of believers.
Author Shaw Clifton ably guides
readers through the Army's evan-
gelical origins, the truth of Scrip-
ture and the personal/experiential
side of the Christian faith. He ex-
pounds on the Army's desire to
understand the secular world and
to care for it, and advocates for
laws and institutions to uphold
God's law. In addressing the
sometimes divisive and misunder-
stood stance of nonsacramental-
ism, as it relates, for instance, to
baptism and the Eucharist, he explains how for the Salvationist,
sacraments are a matter of the heart and involve every aspect
of life.
This definitive portrait examines the Army's expansion into 10
new countries between 2006 and 2011 under General Clifton's
leadership. It outlines three key dilemmas facing a global church,
including nationalism, cultural differences and the ultimate
threat of war. Now in its fifth printing, this popular Crest Book
offers Salvationists and non-Salvationists alike an instructive
look back at the growth of the Army and a hopeful vision for
the future.

I
t was an inspired thought to publish
The People's General, marking the
20th anniversary of General Eva Bur-
rows' retirement as an active officer.
This colourful large format book is alive
and full of energy.
Divided into two sections, the first part
is an edited transcript of an in-depth inter-
view with the General in 1996. Absent of
Salvation Army jargon, it is down to earth,
open and honest, and confirms that Bur-
rows was ahead of her time on a number
of issues. She tackles questions of wom-
en's leadership, leadership styles, the Ar-
my's place in the world today and her own
relationship with God. The book includes
details of Burrows' upbringing and family
life. "I didn't want anything to do with The Salvation
Army," she states. Then she realized that God was
calling her to work in Africa and that officership was
the road for that purpose.
The second part is a photographic montage of her life.
The more than 200 photos, many never before published,
leaves the reader with the impression that the General is
completely at home in any circumstance, in any culture
and with any generation, as long as she is with others.
Still actively involved in her corps, her philosophy is
summed up when she says, "Actually, I am a now person.
I live in the now."
Salvationist historians and those who appreciate
biographies will find this book rewarding, as will anyone
feeling tired in their officership and those who need a
lift in their spiritual life.

Major Glen Doss is the official
text for the new recovery pro-
gram for those seeking mem-
bership in The Salvation Army.
Doss draws on his many years
in ministry with Salvation
Army Adult Rehabilitation
Centers (ARC) to expertly
demonstrate how individuals
and groups can use this re-
source to understand why
"The Salvation Army's outward
movement of love for the
world requires a correspond-
ing inward movement, a call-
ing from ourselves to God." He
