The War Cry | DECEMBER 2014
A born-again Christian, Dr. Dollak has no
problem combining his faith in God with what
he also knows as truth through his medical
credentials in chemistry, psychology and
optometry. His association with The Salvation
Army is two-fold. First, His work with the men
at the Houston Adult
Rehabilitation Center
(ARC) is farreaching toward their recovery;
also, plans are in the works for eye clinics to be
operated under the Army's auspices in Haiti.
His training as a chemist led Joey to es-
pouse the Biblical truth that the eye is the
window to the soul
(Matthew 6:22). Joey cites
l
fascinating data on the formula of Spherical
Equivalence.
"It is a fact that 80% of all alcoholics globally
are male," the doctor explains, according to his
research. Also, eight years of research at the
ARC reveals that 95% of the men in the
program are farsighted--which further sup-
ports Joey's prognoses.
"A farsighted eye tries to control everything
naturally from a subconscious autonomic level.
Thus, farsighted people must `work harder' to
achieve focus through their lenticular/pupil
relationship; plus their natural desire for
balance drives their
tendency to nearly
always `fix' whatever
problem is causing
this imbalance--often
employing all the
wrong applications,
such as alcohol, drugs,
sex, and on and on."
Joey adds that
nearsighted people
are quite the opposite.
"A nearsighted eye
is missing information
due to poor structural
focus. This type of condition can only control
what is received," he says. "Nearsighted folks
tend to find security in maintaining control of
how/what they receive. They become edgy with
just a couple of drinks as the alcohol competes
for their balance of control.
"By contrast, the farsighted among us are
far more willing to give up control in order to
achieve some sort of balance, even when it is
the wrong balance."
Because of our sinful condition, "people
normally learn how to fix things the wrong
way. Their set of norms isn't based on the truth
found in Christ."
There are exceptions: "15% of alcoholics
have a psychological diagnosis."
The reason more men are alcoholics involves
testosterone levels that begin to decline at age
36. "Sure enough," Joey points out, "most male
alcoholics are between the ages of 3860."

r. Joseph Dollak, O.D., is anything but your
typical eye doctor. "Joey," as he prefers
to be called, has taken optometry to a
whole new level of ministry and practical
assistance for people struggling with addiction.
