The War Cry | DECEMBER 2014
As proclaimed to Joseph, God's salvation is for the
individual, but more than that, for a people as well.
At the time of His birth, the Jewish nation thought
it was for them -- and it was. But God intended to
push out beyond the boundaries of a single Middle
Eastern country. His design is a new people. As Peter
has said, "But you are a chosen people, a royal priest-
hood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you
may declare the praises of Him who called you out of
darkness into His wonderful light. Once you were not
a people, but now you are the people of God"
(1 Peter
2:10,11 NIV). What
is our claim to this
special status? Our
claim is a person:
Jesus Christ, Lord
and Savior.
Someone has said,
"If our greatest need
had been informa-
tion, God would
have sent an edu-
cator; if our great-
est need had been
technology, God
would have sent
a scientist; if our
greatest need had
been money, God
would have sent an
economist; if our
greatest need had
been pleasure, God
would have sent an
entertainer; but our
greatest need was
forgiveness; so God
sent a Savior."
Albert Orsborn, the
PoetGeneral of The
Salvation Army, put
our situation in song,
I have no claim on grace;
I have no right to plead;
I stand before my Maker's face,
Condemned in word and deed.
But since there died a Lamb,
Who, guiltless, my guilt bore,
I lay fast hold on Jesus' name
And sin is mine no more.
