olonels Merle &
Dawn Heatwole
arrived at The
Salvation Army's
National Headquarters
to take up their new
appointments
(effective October 1)
as National Chief
Secretary and
National Secretary
for Women's Ministries, respectively. Colonel Dawn also
has a second appointment as National Representative,
Veteran's Affairs Voluntary Services (VAVS).
Immediately preceding this appointment the
Heatwoles served as Chief Secretary and Territorial
Secretary for Women's Ministries and Candidates'
Secretary in the USA Central Territory.
Colonels Heatwole were officially installed in their
new positions by USA National leaders, Commissioners
David & Barbara Jeffrey.
The Heatwoles are both children of Salvation Army
officers: Lt. Colonels Merle L. & Vivian Heatwole and
Colonels Thomas C. & Mary Lewis. They were married
in 1981, entered the College for Officer Training the next
year and were commissioned in 1984.
Colonel Merle earned a Bachelor of Science Degree
in Mathematics from Marquette University. In 2008 he
was selected to be a delegate in the 196th session of the
International College for Officers in London, England.
Colonel Dawn earned an Associate of Arts Degree
in Practical Ministries from Olivet Nazarene University in
Kankakee, IL. In 2014 she was selected to be a delegate
in the 221st session of the International College for
Officers in London, England.
The Heatwoles served as corps officers in St. Cloud,
MN, Peoria, IL, and Topeka, KS. They have served at the
divisional level as (respectively) Youth and Candidates'
Secretary and Guard and Sunbeam Director and Corps
Cadet Counselor for Kansas and Western Missouri, as
Secretary and Women's Ministries Secretary for Western
Michigan and Northern Indiana, as Commander and
Divisional Director of Women's Ministries for Kansas
and Western Missouri, for the Western Division with
headquarters in Omaha, NE and the Heartland Division
with headquarters in Peoria, IL.
They have also served at the Central territorial level
as Youth and Candidates' Secretary and Assistant
Territorial Youth and Candidates' Secretary, as Corps
Mission and Adult Ministries Secretary and Assistant
Territorial Program Secretary, and Secretary for Business
Administration and Territorial Candidates' Secretary.
The Heatwoles have three adult children: Michael
(Linnea), Michele (Dan), and Melissa (Kenyon). They
have one grandchild, Carter.

Retirement-Colonels

olonels William and Susan Harfoot
received their certificate of retirement
from Comssioner David Jeffrey, National
Commander, at a ceremony hosted by the
National Commander and Commissioner Barbara
Jeffrey at National Headquarters this fall.
They enter retirement (effective September 30) from
their appointments as National Chief Secretary/National
Secretary for Women's Ministries and the National
Representative for Veterans Affairs Voluntary Services,
respectively.
Other participants of note were: Commissioners Ken
and Joy Baillie, Philip and Pat Swyers and James and
Carolyn Knaggs, Colonel William Speck, Lt. Colonels Jeff
and Dorothy Smith and Richard Vander Weele, Majors
Miriam Gorton, Evie Diaz, Morag Yoder and Ray Cooper.
In presenting their certifi cate, the National
Commander described them as "a perfect couple that
love the Lord, love the Army, and love people."
Colonels Harfoot are both natives of Detroit and
lifelong Salvationists. Colonel Sue's parents and Colonel
Bill's mother served as Salvation Army Offi cers.
The Harfoots were commissioned as Salvation Army
offi cers and ordained as members of the "Companions
of Christ" session of cadets in 1977. They served in corps
appointments for over 17 years, as training Principal and
Director of Campus Services for the Central's School for
offi cers training, as divisional leaders for the Central's
Western Division, and as Territorial Secretary for
Personnel/Offi cer Resource and Development Secretary.
The Harfoots also served in the USA Western
Territory as Chief Secretary and Secretary for Women's
Ministries.
They make their retirement home in Clearwater, FL.
