Thankful
I
t has been over seventy years
since President Franklin Delano
Roosevelt gave his famous speech
on January 6, 1941, entitled "The
Four Freedoms." He spoke of freedoms
he believed everyone should be allowed
to enjoy: freedom of speech and expres-
sion, freedom of religion, freedom from
want and freedom from fear. Norman
Rockwell captured the meaning of these
freedoms in his iconic illustrations that
appeared one at a time in four issues
of The Saturday Evening Post in Febru-
ary and March, 1943.
What do the Four Freedoms mean for us
this Thanksgiving holiday?
Freedom of Speech
was something
Mayflower pilgrims secured before they ever
reached the shore of the new world. They
signed the Mayflower Compact on the ship.
They wanted every person to have the right to
speak their mind, so that even those who
