Did God call you in a dramatic or
clear way to this way of life?
JC:
I did have an initial call that
was very clear about getting in-
volved in ministry and being a
Salvation Army officer. But over
time, as you grow and mature,
study and allow God to speak to
you, it comes down to the prayer
that God would replace my heart
with His heart.
I think we really need to pour
ourselves into God's Word. That's
been my focus throughout my
life, being directed and fed from
God's Word, learning by listening
to other believers. There came a
point where God really gave me
a heart for souls. I realized that
what I was doing needed to be
from the perspective of serving
Christ and that my heart really
needed to love those people, to see
past whatever it is we're looking
at to the heart of those individu-
als, people created in the image of
God, who God values.
We are following the example
of Christ in terms of meeting
the needs of people. Jesus didn't
preach. He served the message,
He lived it.

How would you like to see the
Salvation Army advance in the
years ahead?
JC:
I would like to see revival in
the lives of our people so that we
are even more effective. I think we
need to be convicted of that and
really commit ourselves again to
the Lord and to His purposes.
.......................
You see a lot of suffering around the
world in your work and the needs are
immense. How do you maintain your
equilibrium, your sense of hope?

gaging more people, training more

Are you surprised at the level of
acceptance the Army has around
the world, or is that an issue in
some places?
JC:
In some places we serve, Chris-
tianity is not the religion of the
majority, so it can be dangerous. I
believe that the Army was raised
up by God and I think that as long
as we're faithful to that mission,
then God will be faithful in open-
ing doors for us. The gospel is the
gospel wherever you are, in the
sense that Jesus said whatever
you do for one of the least of these
you do for Me.
This is God's mission. It's not
mine. It's not The Salvation Ar-
my's. It's God's. The Salvation
Army is the medium that we do
it through, but ultimately the ser-
vice is for God.
I pray for my staff and that God
will lead us away from things we

world and we need to work with
IHQ to make sure those are the
best they can possibly be.

What is unique about the Salvation
Army's development work?
JC:
SAWSO works with the local
Salvation Army in 126 countries.
The footprint of The Salvation
Army is huge. The advantage, in
Haiti for instance, is that we were
there when the horrific earthquake
hit three years ago, and we'll be
there after its over, we're staying.

How is the process of developing
indigenous leadership going?
JC:
I just came back from a con-
ference last weekend in London
and one of the biggest issues in
projects all around the world is
the capacity of people to imple-
ment various projects. Our capac-
ity building program in the future
will be critical, we think. Since the
Army routinely moves officers into
new appointments, it's about en-
