Jesus spoke often about truth. He said
things like "If you hold to My teaching, you
are really My disciples. Then you will know the
truth, and the truth will set you free" (John
8:3132). "When He, the Spirit of truth, comes,
He will guide you into all truth" (John 16: 13).
Jesus knew His statements about truth, especially those about Him
being the Son of God, would cause friction. They got Him killed.
The early followers of Jesus were bold in teaching that the
truth of Christianity was not a local fad or a privatized religious
sect. They were committed, even to the point of death, to
bringing the truth of Jesus to all people everywhere.
The Bible contains a metanarrative. It is the big story of
the universe into which all other stories fi t or don't fi t. It is not a
compilation of myths to inspire morality; it is a sweeping view
of all reality. The Christian message is that God really did cre-
ate the world, that human sin destroys our relationships with
God, that Jesus truly is the Son of God and that He was born
on the earth as a baby. He lived in a particular place (Nazareth)
at a particular time (the beginning of the fi rst century AD). He
had real students (the disciples) who wrote real accounts of His
life teachings (the Gospels). He was crucifi ed on a real cross;
He died and was buried for three days. Then He rose from
the dead. God brought Jesus from death to
life. Jesus met with many of His followers after
the resurrection. Then He ascended to heaven
where He is alive and waiting for God's signal
to return to the earth and bring human history
to a dramatic conclusion. Our lives are being
lived in the middle of this story. We each face a personal deci-
sion: What will we believe, and how will we live?
No other belief system says the same thing as Christian-
ity. They are all different by varying degrees. If all the stories
can't be true, how is a Christian to interpret other religions?
Are other belief systems carefully crafted lies of the Devil in-
tended to lead humanity away from Jesus? Are other religions
misguided derivatives from the one true story? Or are they hu-
man constructs seeking to feed our basic hunger for meaning
and hope? I would venture to say that perhaps
all three of those possibilities are at play. If there
really is a true narrative that we desperately need
to know, then it would seem that our human quest
for God could lead us to some misconceptions like panthe-
ism or agnosticism. It also seems that creating a pseudostory
such as atheism would be a good strategy for the Enemy of
our souls to sell to us. After all, in this
story of Christianity, there is an
Enemy. He is at war with God,
and he is at war with God's
most treasured creation -- us.
