General Linda Bond formally
established the work of The
Salvation Army in the King-
dom of Cambodia in Novem-
ber, bringing the number of countries where
the Army is officially recognized to 126.
The Korea Territory first expressed an
interest in exploring mission outreach in
Cambodia in 2008. A small team from Korea
established a mission outreach there in 2009.
A member of that team, Young People's Ser-
geant Major Kim, Hong-soo, returned to Cam-
bodia some time later and commenced a min-
istry with university students in Phnom Penh.
The official opening was conducted by
Commissioners Park, Man-hee and Kim,
Keum-nyeo, territorial leaders for Korea, and
45 officers and soldiers from their territory.
The officers in charge of the new work are
Captain Shin, Jin-kyun and Captain Lim, Hy-
ang. The inaugural meeting was attended by
the Republic of Korea's Ambassador to the
Kingdom of Cambodia as well as local church
and business leaders.

The War Cry | JANUARY 2013
A RICH LEGACY
Geberal John Gowans
was promoted to Glory
on December 8, 2012, at
the age of 78, after a long
period of declining health.
General Gowans, The Sal-
vation Army's international
leader from 1999 to 2002,
will be remembered for
his unique, colorful and
larger-than-life personal-
ity. "When God made John
Gowans he threw away the
mold," writes General John
Larsson (Ret.) in his fore-
word to General Gowans's
autobiography. "Into the
gift-mix of this original he
poured the potential of an
unconventional thinker, an
arresting speaker and a
charismatic leader. He add-
ed the dynamism of a man
of action and the creativity
of a poet, the ruggedness
of an Elijah and the spiritu-
al sensitivity of a John the
Beloved. And he topped
it all with a large dollop of
humanity!"
General Gowans was
passionate about the
Army's fundamental mis-
sion, memorably defining
it as "saving souls, growing
saints and serving suffer-
ing humanity." He boldly
reformed the conditions
of service for officers, wid-
ened the advisory circle
to the General by creating
the General's Consultative
Council and unfailingly
challenged his hearers
around the world through
his vivid, pointed and pro-
phetic messages.
General Gowans leaves
a priceless legacy in the
more than 200 songs he
wrote, many of them origi-
nating in the ten musicals
he co-authored with Gen-
eral Larsson. His ministry
will also live on through
his three books of insight-
ful, warm and humorous
prayer poems under the
title O Lord. In retirement,
General Gowans reached
and influenced thousands
by authoring the Army's
daily devotional Words of
Life
for several years.
John Gowans was born
in Blantyre, Scotland on
November 13, 1934, of of-
ficer parents. He entered
the International Training
College, London, in 1954 as
a cadet of the Soulwinners
session. There he met Ca-
det Gisle Bonhotal, who
had entered training from
Paris, and they married in
1957. John and Gisle be-
came parents of two sons,
John-Marc and Christophe,
and there are now four
grandchildren.
The funeral and thanks-
giving service, led by Gen-
eral Larsson with General
Linda Bond participating,
was held at William Booth
College, Denmark Hill,
London.
