worse, it could be read
that there was some legiti-
mate basis for placing chil-
dren into the gas cham-
bers of Auschwitz. If folks
cannot get beyond your
opening paragraph, they
will not finish reading your
article, which explains the
promise of forgiveness and
salvation through Christ.

A Part of You
This is my first year of sub-
scribing to the War Cry. A
few weeks ago I was hav-
ing coffee at my caf and
reading it. I noticed a lady
glancing at my table as she
walked by. As she refilled
her coffee cup and came
by again, she stopped and
asked what I was read-
ing, and I told her it was
the Salvation Army's War
Cry
. She then struck up a
conversation about how
her sister had been helped
and blessed by the Army
Thief on the Cross
Your article "The Thief on
the Cross" in the October
2012 War Cry begins with
"Not the gas chambers of
Auschwitz . . . can match
the darkness of that hour
on Friday
[when Jesus
was cruci-
fied]." It goes
on to say, "De-
spite this none
were as inno-
cent as Christ,
the sinless one.
No death was
as undeserv-
ing as His. No
cruelty was
less warranted,
no hate more
displaced
than what was directed
at Him (italics mine)." As
you correctly point out in
your article, Jesus "volun-
tarily went" to his death in
faithful obedience out of
love for the world for a re-
demptive purpose. Unfor-
tunately, the kind of words
used in your opening can
create a barrier to sharing
God's love and, for the vic-

Outstanding!
Last month I was moved
from a twoman cell in a
prison to a 53-man dorm
where I share the War Cry
with others and observe
as it is passed around.
Now that the magazine
is gone monthly, I will
miss not receiving it as
often at mail call. But the
changes are outstanding!
Thank you to all who con-
tribute to the tasks that
provide such a blessing.

On Earth as in Heaven
At our divisional social
service seminar Major
Betty Israel shared a quote
from our National Com-
mander, Commissioner
William Roberts. I now
have this quote in my of-
fice: "In God's Kingdom,
this King rules with a
towel and not a sword. If
you would be great, you
must learn to serve." This
is so true--in 34 years of
officership I have lived it
and now have a new per-
sonal mission statement.
I would like to add my
affirmation on the new
War Cry. The November
2012 issue is excellent. I
have read it from cover
to cover and love the
new look and feel. Thank
you for giving us some-
thing to be proud of.

Sizzling Sentences
The November 2012 issue
of the War Cry is a "crack-
erjack," which according
to the Oxford Dictionary
is an "exceptionally fine
or expert thing or per-
son." There are sentences
which sizzle and the lay-
