was born with a spiritual silver spoon in
my mouth
. I always knew right from wrong
and never strayed far from the path of holi-
ness. Throughout my life, if you could not find
me on the baseball field, I was at the church. I
grew up thinking that I knew what I wanted
to do, and that was to become an airplane pilot and
fly. I jumped on that endeavor during my sophomore
year of high school, and I could even fly a plane
by myself before I was able to drive. I progressed
quickly through training, and before I knew it, I was
flying a jet for Delta Airlines.
I had what the secular world would call every-
thing: a great schedule, freedom to travel to anywhere
in the world and a great paycheck. You see, I based
my success on the amount of money I could make. My
primary motivation for achieving financial success was
to provide a great Christian education for my children
and a comfortable lifestyle for my wife. I was quickly
making a name for myself at Delta as the only first
officer ever to be asked into the training department.
At the same time, I was struggling with God about
what to do with my life. Although I thought that if I
did enough for the church, God would leave me alone,
it was really a way for me to ignore Him. The strategy
worked for a time. I put God on mute, until drastic
circumstances changed my perspective.
My family was involved in a rollover car accident
that the police and fire rescue workers said was un-
survivable. At that moment I asked myself a tough
question. If I had died in that crash, would I have led a
fulfilled life? I could not honestly say yes. I knew that I
needed to give my all to God, not just a portion.
Satan tried to overturn my decision to answer
God's call. During my meeting with the Chief Pilot
at Delta to submit my resignation, he asked, "Are
you sure you want to throw all this away? Delta has
plans for you and a six figure salary is only months
away." The first thing that came to mind when he said
this was to remember how Jesus
rebuked His disciple Peter when
Peter contradicted His Master's
destiny.
"Jesus be-
gan to show to
His disciples
that He must... suffer many things... and be killed,
and be raised the third day.
"Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke
Him, saying, `Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not
happen to You!'
"But He turned and said to Peter, `Get behind
Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not
mindful of the things of God, but the things of men'"
(Matthew 16:2123).
My success now is driven by one thing, and that
is the Lord Jesus Christ. I hope that your success and
your life are driven by Christ, too.
