The War Cry | AUGUST 2013
Every so often from out of the blue
someone serving
a prison sentence is set free. The prisoner literally wakes
up in a cell one morning and goes to sleep that night in
a palace.
Whatever the reason--a long-delayed parole, a sud-
den pardon from the governor, additional evidence that
exonerates the prisoner--it must be among the sweetest
emotions on earth to one minute breathe the stale, insti-
tutionalized air of a penitentiary and the next inhale the
fresh, clean oxygen of freedom!
I've watched enough Law & Order to know now that
a single DNA revelation can set the innocent, the wrong-
fully accused, free.
One such incident (minus the DNA) is found in the
Bible. It was part of God's mysterious plan to save mil-
lions of people.
The prisoner's name is Joseph. Genesis 41:14 gives us

the dramatic moment when his fortunes suddenly swing
like a pendulum: So Pharaoh sent for Joseph, and he was
quickly brought from the dungeon. When he had shaved
and changed his clothes, he came before Pharaoh.
Joseph, wrongfully accused, had languished in a
filthy prison dungeon for several years, along with rap-
ists, murderers and thieves, wondering where God was
in the nightmare.
Joseph's makeover for presentation to the Pharoah
must have been spectacular.
Bathed, clean-shaven, hair combed and glistening,
wearing clothes that didn't reek of, well, prison smells--
the restored Joseph stood before the king of the civilized
world.
If you want to know what happens next in this ad-
venture, read about it in Genesis 41 and on.
The question it raises is, are you imprisoned, or are
you set free by the saving power of Jesus Christ?
The God who was sovereign over the events of
Joseph's life is the same God that loves you today!
Physical freedom means nothing if your spiritual life
is languishing, bound by the chains of sin, or, dare we say
it, dead to the things of God.
Accepting Christ as your Savior is the life-altering,
pendulum-reversing moment for you. Step right up
for your new clothes, a clean shave and a haircut and
a future that is out of this world!
