Commissioner
William Francis
was on hand at the
Christian Book Asso-
ciation's International
Christian Retail Show
in St. Louis in July
to sign copies of his
Crest Book, Celebrate
the Feasts of the Lord
.
The book has already
gone through its fifth
printing. Its in-depth
and engaging analysis of the significance of Jewish Feasts in light of
the Christian hope makes it a perennial favorite. (Available at www.
shop.salvationarmy.org.) Convention delegates also perused other
representative Crest Books on display.

Q:
How has your father's very
painful and difficult fatal illness
played in the writing of this book?
A:
I sure miss my father. He died
in 1985. I still think about him
every day. That forced me to work
through the whole idea of suffer-
ing. I was in my mid-twenties at
the time, thinking through those
questions. What is the purpose of
suffering? Why does a good God
allow such bad things to happen?
In the book, I ask the question
"Is God only good when the out-
come is?" If God is only good when
the outcome is, He's not a good
God, because the outcome isn't
always good.
.......................
Q:
What would you like to see
happen from this book?
A:
To see it used as a weapon
against despair. When people
go through hard times, there
is a trough they go through,
this feeling of utter hopeless-
ness. I talked with a mother
whose 15yearold son tried
to commit suicide. I can't un-
derstand it; I know there are
some chemical issues in the
brain. What that boy needed
was someone to convince him
that he's going to get through
it. Despair is the enemy in a
time of tragedy, that feeling of
being closed in or sucked down,
pulled under or drowning. We
need a word that says we're
going to get through it. I tried
to couch it in fair expectations. In
the book I say "you'll get through
this," but it won't be painless and
it won't be quick. A lot of times
it's not. All of us go through tough
times; sometimes whole societies
go through tough times. I'm hoping
it will help people fight that feeling
of despair enough to just get back
on their feet.
A Conversation
............
Max Lucado will be ministering with the message of You'll
Get Through This
on 9/11/13 at The Salvation Army Centennial
Temple in New York City. This special event will be simulcast to
churches across the country and will also be available to The
Salvation Army corps and soldiers through a live stream
facilitated by each territory's media ministry.
Editor in Chief Major Allen
Satterlee joined Max Lucado
on the
stage at the conference to spotlight to the
1,000 attendees a joint project with the Sal-
vation Army Eastern Territory to aid disas-
ter victims. Mr. Lucado's long-time publisher
Thomas Nelson, part of HarperCollins Chris-
tian Publishing, is working with The Salva-
tion Army Eastern Territory and CBAthe
Association for Christian Retail, to reach one
million broken hearts with the message of
Lucado's upcoming book, You'll Get Through
This, Hope and Help Through Turbulent Times,

scheduled for a September release. The spe-
cial Salvation Army edition will include an
introductory letter plus an insert featuring
stories of people who have made it through
difficult times with the Army's help. When
customers purchase a copy for $5 at participating Christian retail-
ers, it will be distributed through Salvation Army channels to victims of
disaster, to those caught in crisis or despair, and to anyone in need
of hope and healing.
