The Salvation Army in Canada
served 11,500 meals, supplied drinking
water and provided emotional and
spiritual support to more than 870
evacuees following severe flooding
in Calgary, Alberta last month. Food,
hydration and a listening ear were
welcome relief to the townsfolk of High
River
. The Army is the only provider of
food bank and family services in this
community of 13,000. Since Army facilities suffered significant damage, Army personnel placed
a temporary trailer unit in its church parking lot to offer food and clothing. Emotional and
spiritual care personnel were deployed to the rodeo grounds and airport where evacuees
registered to learn of the conditions of their homes. Responders also roved streets to support
residents as they cleaned out from the destruction. At the evacuation center in Medicine Hat,
Army personnel distributed clothing, vouchers and gift cards to the residents of 170 homes that
were uninhabitable. In Nanton, Salvation Army officers and volunteers provided food, hydration
and emotional and spiritual care to more than 700 people per day.
Following the crash-landing of an Asiana Airlines Boeing 777 at San Francisco
International Airport, USA, last month, Salvation Army teams from the greater San Francisco
area served as translators while providing supplies and and emotional care at the airport and the
hospitals where survivors were taken. Army volunteers provided Korean, Cantonese and Mandarin
translation to help with communication with government officials and accompanied passengers
to healthcare and optometry appointments. The Army also set up a special clothing room as
part of a Family Assistance Center, created to help assess and meet the immediate needs of
Flight 214 passengers, including an array of new garments, hygiene items and luggage, as well
as toys and games for children.

SERVICE
Essence
Emergency
Services
at Point of Need
The Salvation Army is
working together with
partner agencies to support
Oklahoma communities
affected by the May tornadoes and
flooding through long-term recovery
case management. During the emergency
response phase of relief efforts, 6,381
cases were opened and services provided
to 31,208 through distribution of cards,
vouchers, and referrals.
As the Army developed a long-term
recovery center, a call center led by
the American Red Cross was a point of
contact for case work (866-477-7276).
The Army manned two
assistance centers in Yarnell,
Arizona for residents
affected
by the Yarnell Hill Fire in July.
The assistance centers extended support
to individuals and families with physical,
emotional, and spiritual needs. Over a
period of five days, Army emergency
workers served 2,478 meals, 4,600
drinks and 261 snacks to first responders,
incident personnel and evacuees.
"Our hearts go out to the families of
this community because we know them
and we love them. We are humbled to
help in any way we can," said Captain
Randy Hart, Incident Commander, who
was one of many Salvationists on hand
to lend support at the memorial service
honoring the 19 Prescott firefighters who
perished fighting the massive blaze.
