The beautiful woman who came to the Social Services office in Alabaster,
Alabama had all the cares of the world on her shoulders and it showed all
over her face. Aux. Captain Jenny Bailey wanted to make this client feel
better about herself and to show her the beauty she saw in her, she felt
inspired to develop a "makeover" program for women
in need, both to promote self esteem and as a a tool for evangelism.
Captain Bailey held a drawing for a free makeover/glamour shot and
arranged for three professional beauticians and a photographer to offer
their services. The owner of a local vintage shop donated beautiful
dresses for the women to wear and the Women's Ministries group helped
to decorate the corps building. On the day of the event, Captain Bailey
started with a Bible study to restore their souls. Then the ladies were off
to the beauty parlor where they were treated to a makeover. After the
makeover, the women had a chance to select a dress to wear for their
photos.
"Each woman who won said she really needed this," Captain Bailey
said. "This blessed me! The women felt so special and that was my goal. I
wanted them to know that they are loved greatly by God. Through this new
Women's Ministries program, three families started attending the corps."

just want someone to talk to. I've even
tried to save some marriages," she said
happily. She had as much experience as
a counselor as I did! But it was obvious
that she detested the sexual part of her
work.
Understandably, she expressed con-
cern about withdrawal from heroine
over the retreat weekend. I assured her
that I would be there to support her.
Normally the process would have
meant enduring awful physical symp-
toms, but, miraculously she was spared
the pain usually borne by most addicts.
Jesus took care of the wrenching with-
drawal! Jan Calberg, our speaker that
weekend, spoke on John's story of the
Samaritan woman at the well (John 4).
In this story Jesus freely gives "living
water" or "zoe" (Gk for spiritual life) to
a woman who is an outcast from soci-
ety. He changes her life through the
gift of a personal relationship with God
that will last through eternity
While Lynn clung to every word
Jan said, 15 years of drugs and prosti-
tution began to melt away. She told me,
"I was in the bathroom Sunday morn-
ing brushing my teeth and felt the wind
brush by me, but the windows were
closed. Then there was a sound of
heavy steel chains falling to the
ground. I asked the girls if they heard
something, but no one heard the clang-
ing sound." My head told me it was her
imagination, but my heart said, "That
was the wind of the Holy Spirit and the
noise was your chains of prostitution
and drugs falling off."
That day Lynn was freed dramati-
cally from the prison of prostitution
and heroin. As her life of fear ended,
she got rid of her pager and received a
new cell number. She became a new
creature in Christ, "taking off the old
self and putting on the new self" (Colos-
sians 3:10). Now she works as a
concierge for various condominium as-
sociations with a goal of earning a GED
degree and then obtaining a real estate
license.
Ten years later, she is an active
church member, doing outreach evan-
gelism in the park. Recently the mayor
of her town recognized Lynn for her
work with youth. We continue to keep
in touch, praying for each other and en-
couraging each other with Scripture.
She never went back.
Ms. Reba Emil was awarded "Woman of the Year" for the Pendel
Division last year.
An active soldier of The Salvation Army for over 25 years, she has
been involved in the Home League for 17 years. Reba volunteers to
teach the Junior Soldier class, helps with the Kids' Club program
ages 5-8 and teaches the Adult Sunday school class. She coordinates
the Bread and Pastries program three times a week. During the
Christmas season she assists with the Kettle Campaign, the Christmas
application intake and the Angel Tree program. She also sorts toys,
clothing, food and related materials.
She continually explains to people about The Salvation Army and
the Women's Ministries programs. Reba knows everyone in town,
and everyone appreciates the blessings she brings.
