The War Cry | September 15, 2012
by NICOLE (NIKKI) GILLETTE
In late 2007, it seemed as if my world was crashing down around me.
I had been married for seven years and we had a beautiful fiveyear
old daughter. My marriage was going though some very trying times.
We weren't able to keep up with our bills and our daughter was hav-
ing a hard time in kindergarten. Just before the New Year my hus-
band and I decided to do whatever we could to save our marriage.
During the next few months we suffered a miscarriage, our house
fell into foreclosure, I lost my job and our daughter was diagnosed
with ADHD. Even our family dog died! Our lives were beginning to
sound like a bad country song!
I was not brought up in the church and had finally accepted Jesus
Christ as my personal Lord and Savior in 2004. I volunteered on Sun-
days at my church but when life started to unravel I stepped down
from my duties there, since the leaders seemed most concerned about
the inconvience I was causing. I found myself questioning my faith.
What did I do to make God so mad that he would allow all these hor-
rible things to happen to me and my family all at once? Did I really
want a God like that in my life? My life as a Christian seemed so
much harder then it was before I believed!
When we settled into our new home three years ago, I started
looking for a job. Seeing an ad for an office manager at The Salvation
Army in Howell, only a few miles from home, I sent my resume out, did
some research and found that much of what the Army believed coin-
cided with my own beliefs. I missed being a part of a church and having
a relationship with God. I knew He wanted more from me, but I was
still angry and unwilling to listen to Him.
Captains Jenny and Aaron Ortman interviewed me and of-
fered me the job. I attended the worship service at the corps that
Sunday and Captain Aaron was preaching a series on forgive-
ness. How fitting.
I went home and thought about what he had said. On Mon-
day the house was quiet. Brian was at work and
Faith was in school. I picked up my Bible and
opened it to Jeremiah 29:11: "For I know the plans
I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to pros-
per you and not to harm you, plans to give you
hope and a future."
At that point I started to listen to God. I con-
tinued to attend church and fell in love with
the Army and what it stood for. Before long
my daughter and husband started attend-
ing with me. God wanted more from me and
had placed me here for a reason. I was hap-
pier then I had been in years--not because
I made it happen but because God had a
plan for us!
Today I am not only an employee of
The Salvation Army but also a proud Sol-
dier, Sunday school teacher and Girl Guard
leader. My daughter is a Sunbeam and Jun-
ior Soldier and my husband is the Corps Ser-
geant Major and Corp Cadets Councelor. We
are both on the Corps Council. Recently my
mother became a soldier as well. How awe-
some!

After Major Julie McDowell attended a
class on good health she wanted to
share what she had learned with families
attending Bible school at the Peoria, Illi-
nois Citadel. The first session focused
on the importance of drinking water
and began with a water carnival. Adults
and teens from the corps managed the
booths from finding baby Moses in a
pond to hauling supplies through the
"Red Sea." At each booth, the Bible
story was: "You WILL get wet!" And...
they did! It was a blast!!! Each person
took home a 20 ounce Salvation Army
water bottle to encourage regular hy-
dration.
At the second session a local 4-H
teacher, "Miss Kim," discussed the im-
portance of eating nutritional meals. Fam-
ily groups prepared salmon patties
and cranberry/spinach salads. The
goal was to teach people that mak-
ing healthy and tasty meals could
be a fun family affair! The highlight
was seeing these families and
individuals laughing and working
together.
A session on exercise con-
cluded with a fun "obstacle
course" followed by an
emphasis on family rela-
tionships using the "5 Lan-
guages of Love" (Words
of Affirmation, Quality
Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts
of Service, Physical Touch).
For the grand finale
everyone brought healthy
food to share at a farewell
potluck dinner. Families
enjoyed games around the
table and good fellowship
as they recalled the many
blessings of the week.
