The War Cry | OCTOBER 2015
Colonels Heatwole Appointed to IHQ
C
olonels Merle and
Dawn Heatwole have
been appointed by
General Andr Cox to
International Headquarters
in London, with the rank of
commissioner, effective
November 1. Their
appointments will be
international secretary for the Americas and Caribbean Zone,
and zonal secretary for Women's Ministries, respectively.
They
leave their present appointments as USA national chief secretary
and national secretary for Women's Ministries. Colonel Dawn also
filled a second appointment while at NHQ; that of national
representative, Veteran's Affairs Voluntary Services (VAVS).
Previously, the Heatwoles served as chief secretary and
territorial secretary for Women's Ministries in the USA Central
Territory.
The Heatwoles are both children of Salvation Army officers:
Lt. Colonels Merle L. and Vivian Heatwole and Colonels Thomas C.
and Mary Lewis. They were married in 1981, entered the College
for Officer Training the next year and were commissioned in 1984.
Colonel Merle earned a bachelor of science degree in
mathematics from Marquette University.
Colonel Dawn earned an associate of arts degree in practical
ministries from Olivet Nazarene University in Kankakee, Illinois.
The Heatwoles served as corps officers in St. Cloud, Minnestota;
Peoria, Illinois; and Topeka, Kansas; and in various appointments
on both divisional and territorial levels.
I
n spite of Tropical Storm Erika,
General Andr Cox received
an enthusiastic welcome from
Salvationists in San Juan, in the
Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands
Division. General Cox became the
second General to visit Puerto Rico,
preceded only by General Frederick
Coutts (Rtd.) 51 years ago. After
meeting with representatives of the
press, a civic luncheon followed at
the Army's multipurpose hall at the
San Juan Central Temple Corps.
Traditional music, dance and food
accompanied the many words of
welcome extended to the General.
Most notable was a resolution
presented by the Honorable Jaime
Perell Borrs, speaker of the Puerto
Rico House of Representatives.
After the General shared remarks, he
was joined by Commissioner Barry
Swanson, territorial commander for the
USA Eastern Territory, and Major Jorge
L. Marzn, divisional commander, as
they cut a special Salvation Army 150th
anniversary cake.
Because of the storm, members of
the Virgin Islands were not able to join
their comrades for the Soldiers' Rally
held at San Juan Central Temple Corps.
Still, the auditorium was filled well in
advance of the announced starting
time. A joyous meeting included
special musical and creative arts
performances as well as the enrollment
of adherents, senior soldiers and a
single junior soldier.
In his message, the General
spoke directly to the hearts of
Salvationists: "One of my greatest
fears is that we of the Army might
be too comfortable when we come
together. What is all this celebration
about? Is it just to feel good when
we worship, see friends, or even to
hear what the Lord is doing? Not at
all. We come here so that when we
go we can be agents of change out
there. The purpose for our gathering
is so that God can to speak to you,
to transform you. The world is dying in
sin and shame. Attending meetings
will not make difference, but how
you live your life when you leave
here will. The world needs to see
lives transformed."
Moving scenes took place at
the mercy seat in response to the
General's challenge, making it
not only a historic visit but also a
spiritual landmark event.
