The War Cry | JULY 2015
Together, the Raders later served as territorial
leaders in both the Eastern and Western Territories
before Paul's election as General. After their retire-
ment in 1999, they settled in Lexington, Kentucky,
but were far from inactive.
General Paul Rader was named president of their
alma mater, Asbury University, until 2006. He later
served on the board of HOPE (formerly the National
Coalition for the Protection of Children and Fami-
lies).
Commissioner Kay Rader has served as a trustee of
Asbury Theological Seminary and Roberts Wesleyan
College in Rochester, New York. She taught in the E.
Stanley Jones School of World Mission at Asbury. In
2002, she received the Distinguished Service Award
from the North American Association of Christians in
Social Work. She has also served on the board of the
Religious Alliance Against Pornography.
She has served on the board of directors of Chris-
tian Friends of Korea, a Christian humanitarian
agency working in North Korea. The Raders visited
North Korea through this connection twice, in 2005
and 2007. Commissioner Rader has served on the
Religious Alliance Against Pornography board.
Together, they have honorary doctorates from
Asbury Theological Seminary (DD), Greenville College
(LHD) and Roberts Wesleyan College (DD). They
were presented with the Lifetime Achievement
Award from Christians for Biblical Equality in 2007.
President Kim Dae-jung of the Republic of Korea
awarded General Rader the Order of Diplomatic
Service Merit (Gwanghwa medal) in 1998 for "distin-
guished service in the field of mission to the Republic
of Korea and the world."
On the final day of their tenure at International
Headquarters in London, one last duty remained:
the unveiling of the General's portrait.
Unlike the 14 individual portraits of the men
and women who served as Salvation Army Generals,
this portrayal broke with precedent in its depiction
of two leaders.
Like "love and marriage," and like "a horse and
carriage," in this case the old song rings true. You
can't have one without the other!
