Men Find
Fresh Start at New
Jacksonville Center
I
n February, The Salvation Army opened the Towers
Center of Hope in Jacksonville, which provides interim
housing for men looking for a fresh start after emerging
from homelessness or addiction recovery, or who have aged
out of the foster care system. These men often have limited
options for housing as they work to become selfsufficient.
One such resident is Darren Balkom, a U.S. Navy veteran.
After struggling to make a living, he took to the streets to
look for shelter and a job. He found both at the Tower Center
of Hope, where he is now a chef. About 12% of the adult
homeless population consists of veterans like Balkom.
The new center is an example of the philosophy of housing
first, which advocates establishing stable and affordable
housing as an essential step for those on their way out of
homelessness or recovery.
Major Thomas McWilliams, Jacksonville area commander,
says this new facility, with its provision of food, shelter,
chaplaincy services and case management, will benefit
the city as "people turn their lives around so they don't go
through recovery and find themselves on the streets again."

99-Year-Old Donates
Funds to Food Pantry
on Birthday
H
ardial Hunji of Yuba City, California celebrated his 99th
birthday in February by donating $40,000 to the Salva-
tion Army Yuba/Sutter Corps' food pantry. The corps
held a dedication service and birthday party for the former wal-
nut farmer and his family.
"We are grateful for Hunji's contribution and expect that it will
help our food pantry for years to come," said Captain Thomas
Stambaugh, corps officer.
