by fellow Salvationists and Asbury
University colleagues, Dr. Edward
McKinley and Dr. David Rightmire.
Special words of farewell
and tribute covered the length
and breadth of their service.
Representing students of the past
was Corps SeargentMajor Nancy
Holmes Turley followed by words
from the present SASF by Edgar
George III. Speaking on behalf of
the family with humor and heartfelt
insight was Robert J. Holz.
As the evening progressed the
Holzes were further honored by
a series of special awards and
gifts. Among them was the Great
Commission Award from the Eastern
Territory, presented by Bandmaster
Ronald Waiksnoris. Professor
Emeritus James Curnow presented
a tribute in music with a special
arrangement of "In the Cross."
The Holzes' retirement ceremony
was conducted by their long time
friends Commissioners William and
Marilyn Francis, who also presented
them their retirement certificates on
behalf of the National Commander,
Commissioner David Jeffrey. But
the crowning moment came when
Commissioner Jeffrey stepped
forward to present the Holzes
with the Order of the Founder, the
highest Salvation Army award. In
presenting the award, Commissioner
Jeffrey cited the Holzes' twofold
ministry as Salvation Army local
officers and as outstanding
faculty members of Asbury
University. "They have touched not
hundreds but thousands of lives,"
Commissioner Jeffrey shared, "and
in doing so proved themselves to be
humble servants of Jesus Christ and
sterling examples of Salvationism."
General Paul and Commissioner Kay
Rader (ret.) then pinned the medals
on the Holzes. The Bandmaster and
Songster Leader were greeted with
a loud and longstanding ovation.
The Holzes made history as the only
husband and wife team in the United
States to receive simultaneous
awards of the Order of the Founder.
Dr. Ron Holz' grandmother, Brigadier
Keitha Holz, was admitted to the
Order of the Founder in 1987.
The citation for Bandmaster Ron
Holz reads, "Dr Ronald Holz, having
given exemplary service through
committed ministry in his corps (48
years), as a member of the Asbury
University faculty (33 years), and
through influential leadership of the
Salvation Army Student Fellowship,
to the glory of God. I hereby admit
the said Dr. Ronald W. Holz to The
Order of the Founder and direct
that his name be inscribed on the
Roll of The Order. Dated this 11th
day of April in the year of our Lord
Two Thousand and Fourteen." The
citation for Songster Leader Bea
Holz was identical except that it was
for 32 years of service at Asbury
University.
The Holzes will live in retirement
in Atlanta, Georgia.
