The
Case
for
Giving

The War Cry | MAY 2014
When times get tough, dona-
tions dwindle. Yet one of God's
final messages at the close of
the Old Testament concerns
giving. "Bring the whole tithe into
the storehouse... and see if I will
not throw open the floodgates
of heaven and pour out so
much blessing that you will
not have room enough for
it" (Mal. 3:10).
In addition to God's
command and promise,
there are practical reasons
for giving.
God Owns It All.
Nothing in our universe,
including you, came into
existence without God.
God designed and created
everything from the
majestic mountain to the
grain of sand on the
beach. From the diamond
that sparkles to the oil
that makes your car run.
How could you watch a
sunset or enjoy the antics
of your kitten and not want
to give back to God?
Suppose the man next door
plants a big garden and offers to share the produce
with you. Would you then take all of the tomatoes,
green beans and corn and leave none for your neighbor?
Certainly not! Common courtesy prompts you to share
with your benefactor.
God is the source of your wealth. You work hard to pay
for your food and keep a roof over your head. You make the
payments on your car and buy the gas. Maybe you even
take a part-time job to buy a few luxuries. That seems
to cover it, you think, but where does the strength to work
for what you need come from? What about your intellect
and talent? The ability to get wealth
is part of God's original design.
Gratitude for your human
capability belongs to God.
The Enormous Need.
On television you see people
struggling to survive in a
village without clean water.
In your city or hometown you
see hungry people on the
streets without jobs. In
church you see a child who
will have no birthday party.
The need is too big for you.
You're tempted to give up.
You can't make much differ-
ence to the masses but you
can make a difference to one
personmaybe even two.
Combined with the efforts
of others, your gift is huge.
Suppose you are the one in
need. You would likely ask God
for help, and God might nudge
someone to come to your rescue.
What if that person failed to respond?
Boomerang Blessings.
Jesus said it well. "It is more
blessed to give than to receive" (Acts 20:35). In expressing
appreciation, someone makes your gift sound four times
greater than it was. The amazing sensation that starts in
the pit of your stomach swells your heart and brings tears
to your eyes. It cannot be equaled.
A
fter a man in our church lost his job,
his wife talked with their two children
about ways to save money.
The boy
suggested they could quit giving to the church. " That's
not an option," his mother said. "We'll eat at home
instead of going to a restaurant and we'll cut down
in other ways, but we won't stop giving to church."
