The War Cry | MAY 2014
The church or mission organization will likely be the
go-between for most of your giving so you will not often
have direct contact with the recipient. You're still good
to receive a boomerang blessing. All you need to do is
remember the words of Jesus on another occasion.
"Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers
of mine, you did it for Me" (Matt. 25:40). Allow that
concept to sink in, and joy will ooze out of your pores.
"Thy Kingdom Come."
What comes to your mind
when you pray those words? Do you want to have a
part in building God's kingdom on earth? Your church
is the key. God's kingdom grows as people accept Christ
as their Savior. Unless people hear the good news of
Jesus Christ, though, they cannot respond. Your contri-
bution helps pay the pastor for preaching, buy Christian
education resources and keep the church up and
running. The results strengthen God's kingdom on
earth. Isn't that exciting?
Build Spiritual Muscles.
A pastor once said, "Give
until it hurts, and then give until it quits hurting."
That might not make much sense at first, but give
it some thought.
If you sprain your ankle while climbing a mountain,
treatment will likely include physical therapy. You
cringe the first time the therapist moves your ankle.
The pain eases very little as the therapist continues
to manipulate the affected area. "Go home and do this
twice a day," you are told. Over the next few days
you notice improvement. The day comes when you
are pain free.
In the same way, giving is good for your soul. It hurts
at first but then you begin to see the benefits. You no
longer have to deal with the unhappiness that comes
from wanting something you can't have. When a 13-
year-old girl returned from a two-week mission trip,
she said, "After my experience I don't want much."
Since giving is an act of obedience, you prove your
love for God. Jesus said, "You are my friends if you
do what I command" (John 15:14). Your relationship
with God grows stronger as you begin to give. The
closer you get to God, the easier it becomes to trust
God in a scary world. That diminishes your worry
about an uncertain future.
With all these reasons to give, can you think of any
reasons not to give?
