In considering my next direction for ministry, I
thought about joining The Salvation Army, where
I knew I could always serve the Lord, even in my
later years. So, with much encouragement and men-
toring from corps Majors Al and Bobbie Sue Smith,
the corps officers, we discussed my finding a place
in Salvation Army ministry.
Again the Holy Spirit was there
for me... surprising me with as-
surances, even as I questioned
why I would be asked to make
another major change, one which could make me
more financially vulnerable in my later years. As
the Sunday drew near for me to be dedicated as
a soldier in the Raleigh Corps, I experienced some
surprises. I picked up a book I had not noticed for
a long time and opened to find the funeral service
program for my only sister. The date of her death
was exactly the same as the day I would become a
soldier. My sister had always prayed for me and my
ministry. I rejoiced to think of her example on this
important day.
Next I realized that the name of a spiritual sister I
had found at the Raleigh Corps -- Dorothy -- was more
than a mere coincidence. Then I glanced up at a photo
of my mom and dad on the shelf, and spoke their
names: William and Catherine -- same as
William and Catherine Booth, co-founders
of The Salvation Army.
I joined The Salvation Army that
Sunday with no doubt in my mind.
Since turning 70, I have returned to social work,
my first vocation, where I serve the Lord daily, min-
istering with God's hurting people.
God's Holy Spirit really does move where He wills,
using our gifts, experiences, and skills as He so chooses,
according to His wisdom and grace.
"God has come
through every time."
