The War Cry | MAY 2014
As predicted, temperatures
soared. Massive amounts of snow
melted. Flooding occurred through-
out the state, but not near that
area. Instead, with the floodgates
securely in place, the reservoir was
replenished. Everyone in the vicin-
ity remained safe due to the proper
management of a few barriers.
In Malachi 3:812 God likens
tithing to a floodgate. He says,
"Bring the whole tithe into the store-
house, that there may be food in My
house. Test Me in this," says the
Lord Almighty, "and see if I will not
throw open the floodgates of heaven
and pour out so much blessing
that there will not be room
enough to store it."

brims with fish, boats, and water... yet it
was nearly empty one bright morning. Former
islands were easily reached from the shore. I couldn't believe the
water was so low despite the large levels of snowmelt. A friend
who told me the authorities purposefully released most of the
water in preparation for the upcoming heat wave. As snow turned
to water, the reservoir would need room for the extra volume
soon coming its way.

I always viewed Malachi 3 as a
way of God punishing us. It sounded
as if God were saying "I'll only open
the floodgates if you tithe. Just look
at what you'll be missing." It was
like standing on top of Hoover Dam,
longing for some of its power to be
released, but knowing it could only
do so if I complied with my obliga-
tion. But as I began to reframe my
thinking, I realized that at times
God keeps the floodgates shut to
protect us, just like the authorities
shut the gates of the reservoir to
keep everyone in its vicinity safe.
When we choose not to give
God the first portion of our in-
come, or in my case, when we
give without joy and thought, He
blocks the sluice, but not
