The War Cry | OCTOBER 2013
he Salvation Army continues to thrive in the
Kenya West Territory, with approximately
500 officers and nearly 226,000 Senior and
Junior Soldiers.* Territorial Commander
Commissioner Kenneth Hodder talks with
Major Allen Satterlee, EditorinChief, about
the growth of the Army there as well as
unique challenges faced in this area. Buoyed
by aid from the Salvation Army World
Service (SAWSO), the corps in Kenya West
are gradually moving toward autonomy
.
Q:
What is the greatest lesson you have learned in Kenya?
A:
I have learned more about the body of Christ, about
the importance of community, and about the need and
the obligation to care for our brothers and sisters from
the people of Kenya than I have ever taught them. I'm
daily made aware of the fact that there is much more
for me to learn.
Q:
How would you describe Kenya?
A:
Kenya is a country that aspires to greatness, not
only in the sense of world influence, but in its ability to
provide for its people. In terms of the church, Kenyans
earnestly seek to do what God desires and asks.
Q:
Describe The Salvation Army in Kenya.
A:
The Salvation Army in Kenya is an energetic, exciting
part of the Christian church. It is one of the largest de-
nominations in the country, and it is constantly expand-
ing into new areas. It plays a key role in education and
in the provision of medical care. It is highly attractive
to both young and old.
