I would like to express my
thanks to the publishing de-
partment for War Cry (USA
version). As a divisional
leader in The Salvation Army's
homeland, I find the whole
production inspirational. The
September 2013 edition raised
the bar to a higher level both
with the coverage of the High
Council outcomes, the feature
on Heroes of the Faith and the
ever excellent "Intersection." I
felt informed and inspired and
strongly connected to Salva-
tionists serving God on the
other side of the world. May
God strengthen this important
and powerful ministry --
you are in my prayers.
Yours in Christ's service.

Kudos to the sports industry
for "caring for those around
us." The article in the Septem-
ber Intersection failed to rec-
ognize the generosity of those
associated with sports while
using words such as "egre-
gious" and "systemic problem"
to infer a linkage between the
business of sports and poverty.
"What about the others?" the
author of the article asks. I
ask, what about the generos-
ity of leagues, owners, athletes
and fans in giving money and
time to support those who
serve the impoverished? What
about the benefits accruing
to cities such as Detroit from
property taxes, business taxes,
entertainment taxes, payroll
taxes and franchise fees paid
for by owners, athletes, em-
ployees, fans, cable companies
and equipment makers?
In the same issue of the War
Cry
on page 30 you ran a
story on how "The Green Bay
Packers teamed up with The
Salvation Army" to provide
back to school supplies for
needy children, just one ex-
ample of the countless acts of
caring by the sports industry.

A Powerful Impact
I had a visceral reaction to
your February story, "After
Football Season," about the
tennis pro who died before he
could decide to give his life to
Christ. I was in the same situ-
ation until I finally said yes to
God three
years ago,
and He has
been with me
every step of
the way since
then. Also in
that issue, I
was struck by
The Salvation
Army's Decla-
ration of War,
which reads, "my battle is not
against the sinner but sin. Any
person who regards himself
an enemy I will pity and fight
for his or her salvation, under-
standing that Jesus loves him
or her as much as me." Wow!
So powerful. Tears poured out
of me. I am grateful that God
has made me a compassion-
ate man who loves others.
Thank you for the War Cry.
It is very uplifting and allows
me to feel God's presence.

Growing in Christ
I would like to express our
heartfelt appreciation for your
kind and generous support
of the chaplaincy program at
Walton Correctional Institu-
tion. Through your faithful
support and prayers our men
have grown into a deeper
spiritual relationship with our
Lord. The materials you have
provided not only helped to
educate them but have been
a wonderful encouragement
as well. I only wish you could
personally see the lives your
ministry has impacted for
the Lord on a daily basis.
