General Paul A. Rader, who served as
international leader for The Salvation Army
from July 1994 to July 1999, will lead the
concluding worship service for the Salvation
Army Writers Conference in St. Louis this
month (http://publications.salvationarmyusa.
org/writers-conference). General Rader joins
other special guests and leaders for the
conference, March 813, who will present
a full slate of presentations, workshops
and special events to encourage and equip
delegates to boldly
communicate "a
word fitly spoken" in keeping with the Army's
mission, for this generation and beyond.
Commissioner Kay Rader will
accompany her husband and contribute as
worship leader as well.
General Rader, himself a man of
letters, is highly regarded for his incisive,
scholarly works that have appeared in many
publications, including the USA War Cry.
He is a thoughtful expositor of God's Word
and of the holistic meaning of the gospel
as expressed through the mission of The
Salvation Army.
General Rader is the first American born
officer to have commanded the international
movement. After retiring as international
leaders of The Salvation Army, Dr. Rader
was elected to the presidency of Asbury
University, where he served from 2000 to
2006 when he again retired.
In addition to earning BA, BD and M Th.
Degrees, General Rader also earned a Doctor
of Missiology degree from Fuller Theological
Seminary School of World Mission in
Pasadena, California. Both leaders have
received numerous honorary doctorates
and awards.
When first commissioned as
Salvation Army officers, they were
appointed to Korea, where they served as
missionary officers for the next 22 years.
Their story is told in If Two Shall
Agree,
authored by Carroll Hunt Rader
and published by Beacon Hill.

A WORD FITLY SPOKEN
Promoting Christian
Understanding at
Event in South Africa
SERVICE
Officers and volunteers from
The Salvation Army's Southern
Africa Territory
believe that if
Jesus Christ was on earth today
He would have been standing
beside them when they took a stall
among the hundreds of exhibitors
at the Sexuality and Adult Lifestyle
Exhibition in Johannesburg, South
Africa, last month.
Their main focus was to
promote a Christian understanding
of sexuality and to raise awareness
of slavery and trafficking issues in
South Africa and around the world.
Explaining that "We didn't go to
condemn anyone, to lecture people,"
Public Relations Secretary Major Carin
Holmes said The Salvation Army
wants to "leave judgment aside and
ask God for a way to communicate
with grace and truth that liberates
and sets all people free."
The organizers of Sexpo
describe the aim of the gathering is
to "educate, inform, entertain and
celebrate our sexuality."
In addition to handing out
promotional material about The
Salvation Army, officers and
volunteers distributed information on
human trafficking, the sexualization
of girls and an account of how a
porn star found God. Visitors were
also invited to sign petitions to stop
human trafficking.
"Sex trafficking is the truly
grim, tragic and hidden aspect of
a glamorized industry," says Major
Holmes. "We believe that it's not
good enough for the Church to sit
inside its four walls and expect the
community to come to us. We have
to get out and be the Church in the
community."
