A
friend of mine has recently been elevated to
the coveted level of "partner" in a prestigious
law firm. Now, I've seen enough episodes of
"Boston Legal" and "LA Law" to know that this is a
big deal. A really big deal.
Most of us think (me included, until now) that once
a promising attorney becomes a partner, he or she is
set for life. Power lunches, 2 o'clock tee times and
$1,000 business suits become the norm, right?
Not quite.
My friend informs me that "partnership," as coveted
as it is in attorneyworld, can and often does backfire.
That's because a partnership status can translate into a
negative as easily as it can a positive, when it comes to
a young lawyer's resum.
In other words, if the company is successful, then so
are the partners, junior and senior. But the young attor-
ney's fortunes will rise or fall according to the bottom line
of the law firm, as long as he/she remains there.
Another way of looking at the "partnership" is in the
workload. Being a new partner--especially a junior part-
ner--can mean an inordinate share of the total workload.
This is despite the bottom line of the company.
The Bible has a word for partnership--koinonia (coin-
oh-nee-ah). Before you raise an objection, let me make
clear that what God says about a partnership with Him
is a far, far better deal than my lawyerfriend got.
And what the Bible offers is, indeed, a sweet deal.
Our partnership (koinonia) is with God the Father and
His Son, Jesus Christ (I John 1:3). This partnership is
rooted in heaven. And the sweet deal I mentioned earlier
is that this partnership never runs in a deficit.
The Kingdom of God always shows a surplus. Let me
say that again: what God offers to every believer of Je-
sus will always pay dividends.
Are you one? A believer, I mean.
It's never too late to become a partner with God.
Heaven offers incredible riches--more than we could
ever imagine or dare to ask!
And that, fellow partners, is the bottom line.
