I
t didn't take long for sweat to pool on the collar of my workout shirt. "Is that
normal?" I wondered as I pumped up and down on the elliptical machine. "Don't
look down," I kept saying to myself as cardio music pumped through my earphones.
But I did look down at the machine's workout clock-- I still had plenty of time to go.
Determined to make it over the next incline, I pushed through the screaming
protests of my muscles. The effort would be worth it, I kept telling myself. There
was a goal in mind--to lose weight, feel healthier, live a longer, more productive life.
It got me thinking about what the Apostle Paul
said about running and the prize of eternal life.
"Do you not know that in a race all the runners
run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way
as to get the prize... I press on toward the goal to win
the prize for which God has called me heavenward
in Christ Jesus" (1 Corinthians 9:24, Philippians 3:14).
Paul, a former persecutor of Christians, openly
admitted that he hadn't crested that incline of faith.
Yet his shortcomings were not going to deter him
from seeking and attaining his goal.
What is your goal? Are you serious about your
pursuit of personal holiness? Are you committed
to pursuing the incline of faith? God doesn't want
to leave us (nor will He) at the altar of our initial
sanctification (our salvation story)! His Holy Spirit wants to do a work within us.
An amazing work! He wants us 100% committed to Him for His purpose and mission!
But we have to be willing to move from spiritual infancy to a deeper spiritual maturity.
The Holy Spirit will prompt, prod and even convict us, but we have to make the
conscious decision to get up and move. There will be sweat and sacrifice, yet if we
make the move, we will begin to tap into the very power of the Holy Spirit.
God does not want us to settle for mediocrity. There is so much more He wants
of us, but to accomplish anything for Him, we need the right priorities.
Prioritizing Spiritual Fitness
Our daily spiritual workout consists of our daily, even moment by moment
conversations with God. A daily discipline of feasting on the word of God, coupled
with our prayerful conversations with Him, will set us in the right direction for growth.
Without these two components placed as top priority in our lives, we face the
possibility of becoming utterly lost in our jumbled world full of empty pursuits.
Are you prepared to sweat and strain for the goal of being Christ-like? The Holy
Spirit wants to complete that work in you. Are you willing? Are you ready? Let's go.

The 2015 International Congress will commemorate
the past accomplishments of The Army through its 150
year history, during which it has grown to live out the
Gospel in 126 countries. The Congress will also celebrate
what God is doing in and through The Salvation Army
today, spurring Salvationists and friends on to even
greater things beyond the year 2015. Every meeting is
being planned to first of all, bring honor and glory to the
Lord and to display the cultural diversity of our world-
wide Army, in keeping with Paul's call in Ephesians 3:8
to "Preach to the nations the boundless riches of Christ!"
The theme for the Congress comes from song penned
by Salvation Army Founder General William Booth:
O boundless salvation, deep ocean of love;
O fullness of mercy, Christ brought from above.
The whole world redeeming, so rich and so free;
Now flowing for all men, come roll over me!
