of Camden. People feel desperate and don't see any
reason to believe in God. People medicate themselves
with gangs and drugs.

AS YOUR WORK MADE YOU MORE OR LESS LIKELY
TO BELIEVE IN THE DEVIL
?
M
AJOR
S
UE
:
More!!! I grew up in The Salvation Army,
singing "The Devil' is a Sly Old Fox." He's way more
than a sly old fox. I'm not afraid of him, but he's not
to be played with or joked about.

HAT IS THE DEVIL
'
S STRATEGY WITH THE DRUGS
IN PARTICULAR
?
M
AJOR
B
ILL
:
It is to take prisoners. In urban settings,
people are being taken captive by drugs, by alcohol, by
sex, by whatever. John Perkins calls it an evangelical
vacuum that happens in the cities. All the talent, all the
good people are taken out and the city is like a donut
hole. The churches also leave. It still might have a pres-
ence but the people don't live there anymore. The
church building is still there. Once they become Chris-
tians and start living a better life the first thing they
want to do is get out of there.
WC: W
HAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THOSE WHO HAVE A
HEART FOR THE INNER CITY
?
M
AJOR
B
ILL
:
Prayer is our best strategy and our best
weapon in spiritual warfare. If people come into the
city and pray for their city or do so from outside the
city that's great. There is power in praying for the city.
WC: I
S THE WARFARE IMAGERY HELPFUL
?
M
AJOR
B
ILL
:
Yes! It is helpful, but you can get carried
away with it. One of the ways we get carried away is that
we give the devil too much credit. He is defeated and he
is whipped but he is still wreaking havoc because we let
him. As Martin Luther said, "One little word shall fell
him."
WC: W
HAT CAUTIONS WOULD YOU GIVE TO THOSE WHO
SEEK TO ACTIVELY ENGAGE THE ENEMY
?
M
AJOR
S
UE
:
"Leave no unguarded place." Any
unguarded place, the devil gets in. I get nervous about
people who brag about engaging in spiritual warfare. The
Lord is doing it. We just stand there and plead for His
help. I tried it on my own strength. It doesn't turn out
well. If you feel you need to do warfare in a particular
arena, be aware that the attacks are not always frontal.
I go into spiritual warfare with fear and trembling.
I don't go in feeling like Joan of Arc. I'm not one who
leads the charge, but I'll do whatever God needs me to do.

S THERE ANYTHING THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD
?
M
AJOR
B
ILL
:
Thinking about spiritual warfare in the
city, the key is in standing shoulder to shoulder. In the
city we have found that we cannot fight this fight on our
own. There are other people. The Salvation Army
should be on the front line, but it is key to get to know
others, too. We need to know other ministers, other
clergy. People who are doing the work whether they are
a church or a parent church organization. Almost all
the places I have been there are people that are praying
in groups for the specific purpose, sometimes weekly,
sometimes monthly, praying for this city. It is key that
we know those people and we pray with them. It is not
guerilla warfare. We have to join together or be out-
numbered. The enemy is concentrating on these major
population centers. If you don't join forces you are
toast--especially in The Salvation Army. We don't do
that as much as we should. The thing I always remem-
ber is that we love Jesus, we are on God's side and we
need to join forces as much as we can.
