I am reminded of C.S. Lewis who
said in The Screwtape Letters, "There are two
equal and opposite errors into which our race
can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in
their existence. The other is to believe, and to
feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in
them." We either think too much about the devil
or we don't think enough about him, either we
don't believe in him or we believe too much in
him. We have to remember that Satan is not
God. Satan is limited, so when it comes to war-
fare he is going to put his front line where there
are the most people. It is not that Satan is not
active out in the country someplace, and certainly he
is, but I think that he is going to concentrate more of
his troops where there are more people and that is in
the cities. Because of that we come more directly
against him. Satan is battling for the souls of men,
women and children but his strategy is somewhat geo-
graphic.
I believe there are different principalities at work,
different strategies in different locations and certainly
in the cities. We have not been here in Camden long
enough for me to get a sense of what the devil is up to
here other than just total mayhem. I prayed when we
were in our previous appointment in Boston and asked
the Lord to tell me what the principalities were we were
up against. God told me surprisingly that it was pride.
I was driving around Boston and noticed every inter-
section is named after somebody. People call Boston
"the hub." Historically, it is the center of all education

and wisdom. There are a lot of real prideful people in
Boston.
I saw Satan attacking the church. A trap ministers
fell into was making a name for themselves. People
didn't talk about churches by their name but by the
name of the pastor. I felt like this helped me under-
stand what we are up against here. It made me not
make a name for myself. That's why we came up with
the name the Jubilee House. People knew our involve-
ment but we tried to keep ourselves out of the center
focus.
In the city you have to be aware of who and what
you are up against. I really believe that there is a more
intense battle in the urban setting. The agenda is to kill

or steal or destroy. The devil wants to take prisoners
and especially in the city he takes them young. That is
what gangs and the violence in the schools and drugs
are about.

Interceding and praying, lifting up peo-
ple, our city, our families. Fasting. When the situation
is dire, I fast. I've gone on personal retreats--just Jesus
and me--out in nature. I get away from people and
things to stay focused. I fast at these times too.
One other way is music. I sing a lot of praise. Prais-
ing the Lord is a weapon of warfare. When the devil
wants me defeated, I praise. It isn't always easy to do.
